Default Serious Butt R/C People

As is the case with my perfectly distracted life, once again the reality's of this hobby have left me amazed...I just flipped through the March 2004 Model Airplane magazine and maaaaaaaaaaaannnnn' there are some serious @$$ R/C people in this world...I don't know the number's out there, check out page's 36>40...Of course keep in mind(as I'm sure you know) this is only a snap shot representing the bigger picture...I have spent about 10 grand (that include's a trailer) on this addiction...These dude's have spent that on one model...When I was a kid I would pass an air field on the way to school...I remember back then thinking this sport was only for those with cash, you know' doctor's and such...I can see today that many more have come in like myself, but' I can also see the big spender's are still rocking the flight line's...

Lowwing,
Since I know how much you love hearing about the Basin....We have one individual that is borderline homeless and another that honestly has $200,000+ tied up in the hobby and he doesn't own a hobby shop either. Every socio-economic level in between is represented. One individual approached me today and ask if he could rent my plane (1/4 scale gasser) The usual deal is you tell him what it will cost if he wrecks it and we all know he is good for the money. He'll even drive out in the brush in his Hummer to retrieve it if lost. (I passed on his offer but will probably let him fly it another time).

You really ought to come and visit sometime.

Simply put, some people have more money that they know what to do with.

It's the same in any hobby. I know a guy that paid $12,000.00 for a Holland and Holland shotgun just to put in a case.

With me, I have so many interests that I have to be kinda cheap on all of them.

I went to my first Quicky 500 a couple of weeks ago. WOW !!!! I'm hooked. I cannot imagine these unlimited and pro class planes. As exciting as the Quickys were, and as many mid-air and ground hits thay had I can't even think of what would happen when two of these HIGH DOLLER "racers" get together. Gotta be a rush.

That may be true, BUT... I've been flying several years at many different fields and have never seen one of them. There are probably several thousand planes under 10 grand for everyone over that.

Funny how so many threads turn into some class struggle. I bet it goes on in the GI Joe collectable forum too.

Yeah, did anyone check out the latest RCReport? They have an event article on the European equivalent of Top Gun. They had a bunch of airplanes over 200 pounds and many close to that. 1/2 scale was common. Very interesting. I can't imagine the cash those guys have in planes that big...

The Old Sears Cataloge forums are the absolute worst for that kind of behavior.

Spending money on planes is OK....at least we get use out of them......a guy here that I work with collects 1/32 scale army collectables...soldiers, tanks, helicopters, etc.....must have thousands and thousands of dollars worth......they sit in a big closet in his house.....

If a person can afford it and wants to do it then by all means knock your self out but I am happy with the size I fly and have no desire to go that big. a guy I know here is barely able to fly his trainer but yet he's mister big shot with his new trailer, a bunch of 1/4 scale ARF's that are still in the box and let's not forget the ones he bought built from other guys. He can't even adjust a little old .46 FX but he has some really nice engines, still in the box. He came out to the field one day loaded up but when someone said to fire one up he suddenly had to be some where else in a very big hurry, what a dumb *****! sorry for the rant but this guy really gets under my skin in a big way and he's slowly losing friends at the field to boot!

I wish I were happy with the 40-60 size. My vision is not as good as it once was-- and once you get a taste of "Big Birds" it is very hard to go back-- I tried a few years back. (many times I wish I had never seen a giant scale sircraft--but since I have, I sure do love em!)

Whatever you do don't bring up manageing, damn he'll walk on water so show you good a manager he was before he retired, ah heck I could go on and on but my blood pressure is going up![:@]

Art,
We have a guy right now who has crashed over 5 large aerobats in the last 8 months. He learned on the sim and went straight to giant scale. He can't fly worth crap, tells everyone how great he is, has religious epitaphs all over his planes and tells some real tall stories. Everyone knows that he is full of it but he is so entertaining to us that we just laugh and enjoy his show. He used to bug me but now I realize that he is a great source of entertainment while I am not flying. Let go and look at the bright side, as long as he is the one guy at the field, it isn't you.
