Your color scheme for your new plane? How do you pick your colors? I'm just amazed of all the different schemes!

Yup, I'll either do a search for a scheme that the real one has. or just stare at the structure until inspiration strikes. Then build on it and modify it in my head until I have a sweet lookin' airplane.

Full sized boat or car magazines -- especially the ones that specialize in just one kind of car or in customizing -- they're great places for inspiration. They don't have all the stcking-out thingies that airplanes do, but they really get into some splashy graphics in cool color combinations.
For airplane examples, control-line competitions award points for finish and they have a long tradition of good looking color schemes. They're sometimes a little conservative (lines mostly following major axes of the aircraft, etc.), but often not, and even on the conservative ones, they really get some visual impact out of the details they add.

I would say at this point I've never built a plane that I was happy enough with my build job to really give one a WAY COOL paint job. Basically I just do whatever is easiest to see. I like the florescent colors on the wing tips or big stripes.
So I guess to answer your question. When I'm standing there staring at the bare airframe I ask myself (what will make this plane easy to see in the air?)

Thanks for the replies!
You guys have some truly beautiful planes!
Here's a pic of a plane I tried to make ugly for combat. My thought was... "the uglier the plane, the longer it lasts." It didn't work.
I forgot to check the ailerons before I flew it.
BTW I didn't have a hard time seeing it!

RE: Where do you get your ideas for..
i've recently liked the "Gator" inspired "sponsered" schemes, My latest the Capiche is done in FedEx, not because i work for them ,like them, use them or anything else, just saw it full scale and thought i'd like something like that, full size looking planes need fullsize schemes.
i also planed a scheme for my Shrike using the Quiksilver logo, but decided to go for a F-86 look-a-like

I get my color schemes from a source not mentioned. I look at what colors go well together by looking at the different [link=http://www.edwardmooney.com/miniflags/]flags of the world [/link] . Go check it out, you'll see what I mean.

Being a scale guy it's fairly easy. I find the scheme for the full size that I like and copy it.
If on a rare occasion I do a sport plane. I will still look at pulling the scheme off of a
full size plane and modify to suit my taste but always keeping the basic scheme intact.
Regards
Roby

I look at many different airplanes and their covering schemes, then pick elements from ones I like as a starting point, and it develops from there. Other than scale aircraft, I've only 'stolen' one design scheme, and thats because I just liked it so much. Luckily, the guy I stole it from stole it from another, who also stole it from someone else. So I'm in good company

I've been sellin' motorcycles for years and every once in a while a sport bike will come out with really cool graphics. The Honda CBR 600 had a very nice purple and neon yellow version with the "Smokin Joe Camel" on the shroud a few years back. Well, I adopted those colors onto my Dazzler. Very easy to See!

When covering times comes along, I jsut head to teh local hobby store, and cruise their coverings. then put two or three riolls together, and the scheme comes from there... and it usually gets mre detailed as I proceed..
Also, after douing this for a while, I have covered a few planes with 'just scraps'.. And experimenting is important..
I like Nepals' flag.. It's not rectangular...
Red is supposed to be teh most popular flag colour..

I build mostly scale stuff. So I go to www.Airliners.net and look up the plane I'm building.

Hey Cheech,
Libya was very original in their color scheme.

The Libyan flag. Nice, eh?

I got some of the lines from and ad in Horizon Hobbys catalog. It was rather humerous to boot! Just take a look at the Webra section and you will see the beautiful pattern ship I used as an insperation, now look closely and you will see the humor. What maketing genius allowed someone to use a ship which clearly indicates it is powered by a YS DZ in a Webra ad?
As for the color schemes I use photos from other planes or just interesting shapes. I like bright contrasting colors also. Fotunatley for me my wife does most of my clothes shopping!
