The straight poop on "superglue"
Superglue - Synthetic Glue
Superglue or Krazy Glue is a substance called cyanoacrylate that was discovered by Dr. Harry Coover while working for Kodak Research Laboratories to develop an optically clear plastic for gunsights in 1942. Coover rejected cyanoacrylate because it was too sticky.
In 1951, cyanoacrylate was rediscovered by Coover and Dr Fred Joyner. Coover was now supervising research at the Eastman Company in Tennessee. Coover and Joyner were researching a heat-resistant acrylate polymer for jet canopies when Joyner spread a film of ethyl cyanoacrylate between refractometer prisms and discovered that the prisms were glued together.
Coover finally realized that cyanoacrylate was a useful product and in 1958 the Eastman compound #910 was marketed and later packaged as superglue.
Just thought you'd like to know...........

Why would you use it for lenses if it leaves them cloudy or changes the optics????

Guess that's why the didn't. Or... maybe the formula was a little different. I got that from a website...... http://inventors.about.com/library/i...ladhesives.htm

RE: The straight poop on "superglue"
There's also a story, that the glue was developed for feild use (military) so that stitches wouldn't be needed. Your fellow soldier could literally glue you back together aftetr being cut up...
We all know how well It glues skin!!

Hospitals have recently started using a medical grade CA instead of stitches in many cases.
Medical use of CA is a fairly recent development, which more than likely saw its first widespread use in the military, so the story about it being developed for the military is probably partially true. HOWEVER, medical use was not the original reason CA was developed.

RE: The straight poop on "superglue"
About two months ago I was cleaning the dust out of a fan housing on a computer video card and sliced my finger so cleanly that I didn't even feel it. I was bleeding like crazy, went to my RC building area and did the best I could to get some CA in the cut. Over a period of time, i was able to get enough in to almost seal the cut. I squeezed my finger in a cloth and went to the immediate care center. When they got to me and took the cloth from my finger, the CA had completely sealed the cut. The Dr. said he really did not want to open it up for stitches since it was holding. So, the CA kept me from needing stitches and I probably could have avoided the trip to the Dr. all together. Today there is no scar or evidence of the cut at all. CA is amazing stuff!
For once, I was glad the CA stuck to my skin!

Having been stationed in Europe in the Mid ninteen-seventies. I can attest that super glue for medical uses is not a recent development. It is however a test of time for our own federal drug administration. My wife gave birth to our first son in Germany by c-section and did not have one stitch in the outer skin closure. She was glued back in place by "Eastman liquid sutures"
and that Son just turned 28 last month...
Just my $0.02 worth

Now that we're on that subject, Here's how I do it......
1. Cut finger.
2. Clean wound.
3. Sqeeze shut.
4. Drop ON glue.
5. Stick finger in open box of baking soda, and hold 10 seconds.
We'll talk about why I've got an open box of baking soda on the workbench later......

In my experience, the baking soda acts as a kicker to the super glue. Doesn't this BURN LIKE HECK on your skin? I would think that adding a second degree burn on top of your laceration wouldn't be a good thing.
I was gluing a piece of receiver foam to a piece of balsa once and accidentally got the foam and CyA attached to my finger. As the glue kicked it just sat there and burned. I had a nice blister after that.

RE: The straight poop on "superglue"
The CA plus the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) creates lots of located heat. This heat and the reaction do a very good job of sterilizing small finger cuts. I have used the fix often with small cuts so that I could keep working without pouring blood on the work. I have never gained in infection with that method. I had many small infections develop from workshop cuts when cleaning with soap and water because even covered, dust and dirt from working would infiltrate the wound. One small infection required antibiotic treatment and was painful enough to stop my work for a couple of days. Not many microbes enjoy the living atmosphere of CA.
Be aware that some small injuries may need real attention. Keep the CA/homedoctor method limited to closing shallow and short skin lacerations.

RE: The straight poop on "superglue"
Yes yes! The baking soda and glue never seemed to heat up on my fingers. I nearly cut the end off my thumb 3 days ago, and now that the soda has chipped off, thew cut is doing well.
I started this thread to "debunk" the myth that CA started as a battlefield "stitching agent".
I double checked my facts before I posted.
I'm sure the first time someone glued their eyeballs together, they "invented" de-bonder (acetone).

RE: The straight poop on "superglue"
Now about the battlefield use of this stuff, well I was cross trained as a medic and I never saw anything even coming close to CA over there and at times it would have been a blessing!!! Now I admit it wouldn't work to put an arm back on or to seal up a stomach wound but darn there was a a lot of small stuff also and infection over there was rampant!!!!![X(]

Here's a video interview with the super-glue guy. Listen to how he pronounces it.
