Default How do brushless motors work?

The title says it all really.

How do brushless motors work and are they as powerful as brushed ones?

Heres how i know it....
theres 3 little coils ( simple explatination ) in the can, tom dick and harry
the core is magnetic and loves other magnets, lets call her maggy lol
when tom is turned and on magnetic maggy runs to him, but as she gets there hes off, but then dick is turned on so she keeps running to him, when she gets there same thing as with tom but now harry is turned on so still she runs, when she gets there hes off but tom is turned on again, so as they live in a circle she carrys on to him.
By switching the speed tom dick and harry are turned on you can control the speed of maggy. as theres no brushes it's only the shaft bearings that wear out and the power given by the motor is more because theres no brush, com etc.
the outrunner motor works the same way only this time maggy is on the outside with tom dick and harry close together inside.
i believe in most motors theres 6 coils with 2 tom's dicks and harrys?? maybe two maggys.. what a busy world.

So in a brushless controller -esc- , does the esc supply full voltage and current from the battery and just change the timing and pulses, or does it vary the voltage too?

just timing. same as regular speed controllers, they do NOT vary the voltage, just switch the voltage on and off quick.

Actually I liked Philly's explanation. Mine would have been it's a 3 phase DC motor with the phases being supplied by the controller. I think Philly's is easier to understand for the non-electrical "engineers" among us. I've been involved with electronics my whole life and getting an explanation across so the average guy can understand it is an art, and not one in my book to be equated with crayons!
