The Winter, What do you do?
What do you do for flying during the winter? Do you have snow where you live? Do you use skis or do you just not fly?
I have not flown yet this winter. I am looking at an electric helicopter to try. I telemark ski during the winter so that takes up some time until spring. We have recieved 5 feet of new snow in the Salt Lake City valley but it has been melting and compressing. Maybe next winter I might fly but I am still working on fixing my plane.

Living here in northen California gives me the opportunity to fly most of the year, the only thing that keeps me on the ground is our short rainy season which is NOW.
I flew last weekend at our field and was float-flying two weeks before that up at Lake Hennessey in the "wine country"
I haven't got into it yet but some people are flying indoor electrics where possable like school gyms.
If you lives where it snows (sorry) you can "float fly" off the darn stuff as opposed to using ski's.

We fly when it's in the teens and even colder. We have a wood stove to keep us warm and a microwave to make hot choclate!
We have missed just a couple of weekends is all.

I just went flying here in NOrth Dakota over the weekend. -1 deg....but it was a nice day. I like to get out whenever the weather allows. Got out about 5 times in Dec. None in Jan...Twice so far in Feb. I used to be a ski bum and get out to Bozeman, MT whenever I can...but living here in the flatlands I make due with what I have.

As long as the snow is not too deep or the wind is not blowing too hard I fly the wings off my planes during the winter here in Montana. My current planes have 5" wheels and gas conversion motors and a couple inches of fresh powder will not stop me!

I just try and stay warm and to heck with flying!!!! When one has a bunch of metal in their body cold weather flying just doesn't turn ones crank!!!! Ya Ya I know I am a fair weather flyer but the cold quickly immobilizes me and the pain just isn't worth it, nope just give me my shop and something warm to drink and I be happy!!!!!

Take the SPA3D out and dead stick it. Crash.[:@]
I think I need a new landing gear.
No other damage, not even a broken prop.
The boys loved the flight.

RE: The Winter, What do you do?
The last time I flew was on January 11th. I had just finished my Magic Extra, and was able to get in 2 flights. They weren't very long because I was dialing in the .46fx and dead sticked both times. My problem is that until we get back to daylight savings time I am unable to leave work, go to the field and get in a couple before the sun sets. Our forecast is for 65* today and 71* tomorrow. Wow great, just that I have to be at my desk working. (you know sorta like now) The weekend looks like a possibility, but we get a lot of wind down here this time of year and the temps are only in the 40's and low 50's. Still ok without the wind.

The only winter flying I do is on January first for the club's frozen wing thing. THen I spend the rest of the winter building models for the new season. I hate flying with cold fingers!

RE: The Winter, What do you do?
The Year has only 2 seasons, building season and flying season. If you can't see the grass through the white stuff, it is building season. If it is warm and sunny with beautiful green grass, it is flying season. Flying season can turn into building season if you have some bad luck, but building season almost never turns into flying season.[8D]

What is the lowest temp a JR 652 or 662 can operate in? They might have plowed at our airfield but there is propably a 3 to 6 foot snow bank to clear. Another thing is were can you get cheap skis?

RE: The Winter, What do you do?
I fly all winter. The snow we get around here dosen't last more than a copuple of days. It is in the 40's most of the time in the winter. My biggest problen in the winter is the wind and the muddy runway
