Just answer the question please
Hi all,
Quickly, my name is Mark and I have actively participated in these forums almost since their beginning. I have read what interests me and passed through the banter. I have written large articles, answered complex questions, ignored trolls, and kept silent on issues I have no idea about (don't you wish all would do the same). However, sometimes I see something that bothers me slightly and I thought I would take a few minutes to write my thoughts and give reason why I feeel that way.
I often look at a question and the first response or two tell the poster to do a search, or that the subject is to old to bother with. It is my feeling that people who give those suggestions forget that there are new visitors coming here always. They come for the INTERACTIVITY of the forums, to ask and get a response to their questions. Sure, there is a huge database of information, but it is not the same thing as having your question asked directly. Imagine if everytime you had a question you had to shuffle through huge mounds of data just to find a simple answer. In short, what that kind of response tells me is that you have little patience and easily put people off. It shuns new blood who may begin to feel less welcome and find another place to play where people will actually respond.
Think about what you would have done if you went out to the field to ask about flying airplanes and somebody handed you a book and walked away. "Hmm, very friendly hobby here". Personal response, personal touch, that is what keeps people interested. Perhaps a better word is participant. People naturally enjoy to participate actively, not hang around a search engine when real people are out there giving answers. Quite possibly, newcomers already used a search engine to find this place where people would answer them with real answers.
Next thought. There also seems to be an issue with "bringing subjects to and end and moving on" (I do not refer to closing threads). Sometimes, when things are petty arguments it is a good idea. But other subjects which are common questions for beginners and low time hobbiests will be asked again and again and again until people stop flying model airplanes all together. People asking about these mundane subjecs deserve the same attention that you may have received. Just because you may be bored with a particular subject does not lessen its importance to those individuals less enlightened than you are. When asked for the thousandth time "how do you do that" at the field, do you tell people its too old a subject and no longer open for discussion.
So, don't be rude, don't be so expert that you no longer need to help. If you don't want to answer the question, then don't post. When you DO post a non-answer, it shows up as though the question HAS been answered, sometimes causing those with the time, energy, knowledge and politeness to answer, to pass over the post thinking that some "expert" has already given the needed assistance. If you are going to advise a search, then at least be kind enough to look and see if the information is there to be found. Refering somebody to a 50 page post of which 90% has little or nothing to do with the actual question asked is useless unless they have the hours that it can take to read through the garbage. Try in the future to post that link that you "know" is out there. Try yourself to find the info. You might find that even with the "tons of good stuff" that you thought was there, the persons question was never addressed anyway.
If you think that you are doing RCU a favor by keeping the database from growing to large, well, leave the database to Marc and his tech folks. Leave moderating and database control to those responsible and be a good participant. If we all decided to stop posting and just attacked the search engine...well, active bandwidth is harder to come by than storage.
Treat people as you wish to be treated. Help where you can, argue where you must, definately have lots of fun, and remember that you too were once a raw novice. If you were born knowing everything, call me. There is a circus in town and they would love to meet you. I understand they need help for their freak show.
Thanks for your ears, er, eyes.
Regards,
Mark

RE: Just answer the question please
Good advice Mark. But you probably should have stopped before the last paragraph. You spent six long paragraphs preaching about how people should behave on this forum, including the sanctimonious, "Treat people as you wish to be treated". You then turned around and took a pot shot at folks that you think are acting like they know it all, insulting them by comparing them to circus freaks. Some people might see just a wee bit of irony in that juxtaposition.

RE: Just answer the question please
Thanks Mark,
I sounds like you have spent (maybe) too much time here. I too feel the same way sometimes. It's people like Jim W8ye, Hobbsy, Basinbum, Tattoo, and you... who make it worth the time I spend here interesting. That is, I learn alot here. What I do find here, is people taking this hobby way too seriously! Other than safety, we all need to lighten-up this is JUST A HOBBY, and SHOULD BE FUN. I really don't enjoy the flying, it's the people in this hobby I love being around. I have never done anything that has the quality of good people that this has.
Again, thanks Mark... for making my stay here enjoyable.

But, I conceed and humbly bow my head. After all, I don't want to insult or anger those circus folk!!!!!!!!!! LOL. See, to me, that is funny!!!
Irony: Flying F3A in Masters but letting the nephew drill the trainer into the field while on the other end of the cable ( it was my old trainer though, LOL!!!) I already have a replacement.
Both my nephew and fiance are hungry to learn to fly. My fiance, no problem, but I must teach my nephew in French.
Irony, part two: An Amercian soldier, retiring in Belgium, teaching Mode 2 in a Mode 1 country in a language that I can only butcher. Irony, a part of every day life.

Thanks Mark I am one of those new ones, and sometimes I don't ask as I am sure it is a old question. I just wait as I don't get around too good on this computer (it wont do what I tell it too, just an old dog trying to learn new tricks). But I do love this site and the people and even enjoy it if they take a poke at me are use a pun or two or pick on me in fun, I love it, love it etc.

RE: Just answer the question please
I also thank you Mark. And I have a suggestion for some of the members... But first, a preface:
I found myself guilty of something similar when I was new to RCU. Someone would ask a question about CA hinges, ans several of us would give a very descriptive answer. Shortly afterward, someone else would ask the same question, and get the "Readers Digest Condensed Version" of the answer. The more people would ask the question, the shorter the answers got.
I felt bad for the guys asking the question, but I didn't want to write out the entire explanation every time, so I did something about it.
I wrote a guide to installing CA hinges, complete with illustrations. For those of you who have never seen it, it can be viewed here:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...3-5709ca96ad27
Now, when someone asks about CA hinges, I can say a few nice words, to let them know that they are getting personal attention, then I point them to the link, so they get the full story.
Now, my suggestion...
For those of you who have good writing abilities, and have answered some of these questions at length before, write a good, comprehensive "How To" article. Take pictures, or draw illustrations, and send them to Erick Royer for addition to the "How To" section of RCU Magazine. If you know HTML, you could even do the whole web page, but that is not necessary.
If you like, you could even send them to me first for a proof-read before sending them on to Erick. If you have a very good article, but no graphic abilities, I will even consider doing your illustrations for you.

I've also seen your concerns posted previously... Would you be offended if I suggested you did a search?
In my opinion telling someone to try searching should not be considered impersonal or impolite.
I have found that any question posed here usually gets a number of different answers the trick is figuring out which are correct and which are not . For the person posting the question this can be a difficult task (If they knew the right answer there wouldn't be a need for the question)
Remember someone may also be new to this type of format and not be aware of the search capabilities!!!
My suggestion is not to assume that they poster has little patience or is easily put off by people.
I realize this is a corny statement, but I believe it is 100% applicable
"Give a man a fish and he eats for day.... Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime"
by providing people with the means to find information (telling them to use the search engine) that has already been discussed you are providing them with the tools to find not only the current question but to future ones as well.
Yes forums are interactive... but not utilizing the database of past information may not provide as complete an answer.
I personnally like to search before I post a question for the simple reason that a lot of good info has been posted by members who are no longer active!!! Without the search my question is limited to only those who happen to see it!!

RE: Just answer the question please
I can respond to this with first hand experience. Many of you have been very helpful to me. Thank you! I have about five years now in the hobby and am still learning. I've made a few mistakes and had to learn the hard way on a few as well. RCU members have provided excellent information when I have asked for help. I usually try to do a search, but sometimes the info does not come up. Example. Try doing a search on the WM Giant Extra. Type out World Models Giant, Extra etc. You get 6 responses from the search engine, none of which answered my questions. Not a complaint, but sometimes info is not as available as one may think. I then posted a thread on the airplane and received one response. I know many on RCU have or had this airplane. No problem, I found the answer another way.
Mark, I agree with your point and just wanted to pass along how helpful the info on RCU is. You sometimes have to separate the BS from good info, but sometimes even bad info can make you dig a bit more to get the best answers to your questions. We all know there is more than one good answer, or method to solving an issue. Finding the best one from old and new ideas and experiences is what makes this site so valuable to me. I try then to pass along what I learned with the hope of helping someone avoid the same issues I may have experienced. Keep up the great work guys and don't take short cuts. Some of us don't know nearly as much as many of you. No dig! meant with sincerity.

I find many of the new guys don't realize there is a search engine. Usually on a new site, the person is so excited that he found it and is so overwhelmed by all the information, he misses the search feature. No big deal explaining it to him. Also helps to answer the question in the process.
The ones I can't stand and it seems to be happening a lot more lately, is when I answer a question for someone on a subject, and others answer, and then someone pops on and says "thats not right, don't ever do it that way" or something of that nature, and then a week later that person that was ripping up all the guys giving answers is asking a question like "how do I start my new plane" or "how do I install the engine in my new heli" or something like that.
To me, the young kids getting on with attitudes are a lot worse than telling someone about the search feature.
Just my 2 cents.

RE: Just answer the question please
About the time that we were switching to the new site. (Last Summer, I think.) I suggested to RCU Admin that a good addition for this site would be a "Search" Tutorial. And that when signing up as a new member that the person would be directed to the tutorial. They wouldn't have to go through it, but it should be presented to them during registration. It appears that 6 months later, we still debate the "search" and the "go ahead and give the answer" question. I try to do both, direct them to the search tool, and at the same time give the answer if I know it. Seems to me that a Search Tutorial is a good idea. I am not real good at searching myself, but do try to find answer before posting.

RE: Just answer the question please
Well I'm with MarkNovack on this one. I quit going to another board because people where really getting down on new people for asking questions.
If we can't ask questions, then what good is the forum? Also, a lot of newbies don't even know about search functions because it is the first time they used a forum like this.
Give us newbies a break and point us to the proper place instead of making us feel like fool's.
Thanks,
Ed

BTW I wasn't directing my response at just newbies IMHO using the search feature applies to all.

RE: Just answer the question please
I am here to tell you that it doesn't matter. If you want to find info on RCU, you can. It's GREAT! Those of us who want to help others will(you know who you are). Those who don't will not. I am not the sharpest knife in the dish washer, but I know when someone is being helpful, and when someone is being a jerk. For the most part there are a lot of helpful peeps here. Occasionally the jerk rears his ugly head. I for one will not let em bother me. I have my own agenda. It's called "having fun". It has been said that some peeps take this hobby to serious. It should be taken serious. After all, these flying machines have the potential to bite ya.But when you stop having fun...it's time to start fishin or something.
I think Marc hit it on the head.
The bottom line is this. If you can be helpful then do so. If you don't have something positive to add then don't. There is no reason to give anyone a hard time here. We are here for the same reasons presumably. To learn, have fun, and fellowship with peeps of a like mind.
I hope all the beginners who come here, will not be put off by the know it alls. We all had to start somewhere, and if not for those gracious individuals willing to take the time to offer their help and support, we would all have taken up fishin by now.

Mark I agree totally! While we are on the subject--
Other things that burn my biscuits are somebody always telling sombody to use the spell check. Yes it is there but keystroke errors do happen.
I am not for leaving the caps button on, but a few members do (for whatever reason) and there is sure to be somebody demand they quit shouting.
The one thing I have learned about ALL posts here on RCU is this--- "You can start a thread about how sure it is that the sun is going to come up tomorrow and there is going to be some condecending smart alleck that is going to take issue with you." Happens every time! Oh well-- It must be a "human thing"---good thread

From what I've seen the vast majority of asked questions get decent answers, and it's not all that often that the new guy gets the "do a search" speech. If the question has been adequately answered, I will sometimes suggest a "search" in the future, but only if the person is obviously very new and is asking basic but difficult to answer questions. "What's the difference between NiCd's and NiMH's?" "Which trainer would better for me?"
RCU is far and away the friendliest and most informative site I've ever seen, and I really enjoy helping the new guys. Some of the questions get really old (after the umpteenth time), but I'll generally take a break from answering those.

RE: Just answer the question please
I appreciate the forum atmosphere and the wealth of info that is to be had here. I also appreciate the people who have offered up assistance when I have had questions. I REALLY appreciate the wealth of friends I have made as a result of this forum.
I Don't appreciate however reading a post where I or some other guy/gal asks a specific question about a plane or problem he/she is having and some circus freak answers up "I don't have that " or "with my (something totally different) "so you should" or "so you should never". Then too are all of those guys that just know they are Gods gift to the RC world and they feel obliged to input on every subject they have any inkling at all about. (primarily found in the 3D forums I might ad so age may be a factor here).
I enjoy helping people and don't mind answering questions if I have the time but I try to wisely (I hope) keep my fingers still if I am not reasonably informed about the subject.

RE: Just answer the question please
The cool thing about the forums and RCU in particular is it is a lot like hanging out at the flying field. You mostly talk RC, sometimes talk about the weather and other current events, ask questions and give answers, see your friends and others that you might not like......
People take what is posted here way to seriously, especially when they are new to the forum format, and need to remember that we are talking about our beloved TOYS. If someone interupts your conversation, disagrees with you, posts inproperly, tells someone to do a search (I do that all the time) or anything else you don't agree with, to bad.
What do you do at the field when someone is rude? You either ignore him or reply, same as you do here. Do you go around the field and tell people how to act? The only time that is justified is when it's a safety issue. So go ahead and give your opinion but don't expect everyone to always agree and respect others rights to disagree with your way of thinking.
