How it's done up north - Winter BOREDOM!
A very bright fellow in our suburban Chicago club came up with a great idea. We'd have a "Viking Funeral" of sorts for the 2003 crashed planes. It was a cold day, attendance was low. The fire was as hot as the Chili, the temps were colder than the beer.
For the record, I came to fly and photograph. I don't crash enough to add to this trash heap :-) [link=http://www.devino.org/mark/airplanepics/funeral/]Click the pic [/link] for the rest of it...

I don't know if I could burn a crashed plane. Not to mention that I don't crash. (I'll get flamed for this one.) [>:]

Dang, you did it before I did! Except I was going to do it on my side yard. That sounds Like a good idea, I will keep my crashed plane* untill Christmas and burn it with whatever else rc stuff I cant use.
Does it smell bad? Just wondering because I dont want neighbors asking me what I was doing lol

Cool idea!!
In keeping with the "Viking funeral" motif... gotta do it on a frozen lake, just thick enough to melt thru the ice when the immolation is complete
Cheers!

Here, the ice is so thick, you could burn a very large house on it without even being afraid to drive a truck across it afterward!
(At last count, the ice on the lake across from my office was 37" thick)

I cleaned out the loft of the garage and fallen branches yard waste and did the same thing last November. Unfortunately, I didn't need help getting others to supply the smashed airframes. [] Kind of surprising when a wing soaked in gasoline ignites and the panels explode with a BANG!.

Only someone from a warm climate would say that.

A few of us were flying off Lake Sebago in Maine last weekend. The ice was over 24" thick, and they had hundreds of cars parked in a parking lot on the ice for the ice fishing derby. A full scale air show was also scheduled, and they plowed a 6000'+ runway for the airplanes. They wanted some demo flights with RC airplanes, and they plowed two runways for us in a x pattern. Plenty of wide open space to fly. Its the only time I was able to combine snowmobiling and RC flying all in the same day. The weather wasn't the greatest, and we had periods of flying in sleet and snow, as well as having ice buildups on the airplanes when we landed.
I just need to figure out how to pull the airplane trailer with the snowmobile for next year
Here are some pics.

sfaust,
Am I mistaken or Did Patty frost up the inside of her canopy? I did some flying off the snow here in Va. couple of weeks ago but none of the large bodies of water around here freeze solid enough to drive on. Until my pool thawed out it did have about 6 inches of ice on it though.

So, did you get any flying off the 6" of ice on your pool? Put a small park flier on it, and it'll seem like a huge frozen lake. You can even park a 1/8th scale RC car next to it with a trailer to complete the effect

Fulll scale on a lake. I still got to see that one. I haven't done much flying on the lakes this year. One lake by my house had a snowmoble radar run a few weeks ago. They plowed a real nice "runway" on the ice. I should get out there and have my own radar run. (my Pizazz busts 100mph [X(])
