You could use thin ca, but that might fog up the plastic, plus it is a health hazard to an eight-year old, unless you supervise him. Canopy glue is a safer alternative, can be cleaned up with water, but you will need to hold the parts together for 10-15 minutes until it sets. It also cures transparent and looks better.

Hi JT;
Greetings from the 'Valley of the Sun'.
Uhm, this may not be of any help at all, but is something that I used, and the system has worked for better than 20 yrs, but the bottle finally ruptured/cracked and needs replacing. I used a former windshield anti-freezewasher, [lived in snow country at the time], 1 gallon semi-clear plastic bottle for my fieldbox refueling unit, and attached a Sonic Tronics electric fuel pump to the bottle with a bent up piece of aluminum strapping about 3/4'' wide using 2 or 3 Pop Rivets at either end of the aluminum strap/plastic bottle joint, and simultaneously sealed with silicone cement. So, possibly you could attach plastic or metal straps to hold your bottles together, and seal with silicone cement like I did. I know it sounds off the wall, but it worked for me, hey just another idea, my 2 cents worth. Whaterver you do, good luck with your son's project, and best regards from sunny and warm Phoenix,
Joe Nagy.

Thanks a whole lot Joe for your sharing your idea ! Clear RTV-silicone glue is another way then. We need to glue the plastic in a very solid manner because we are planning on making a bigger object from the bottle plastic as a raw material. I will try them both and see which works out better.
Thanks to you and Rajul for your interest on this, you guys are great !!! JT

RE: What bonds 2-liter-bottle plastic ?
Are you building a water rocket??
If so, the best glue you can use for joining two bottles that will be pressurized is PL Premium (in the US) or SikaBond T1 (in the rest of the world). They are poliurethane based adeshives and work extremely well. The downside, is that it takes 24 hours to dry and up to a week to cure....
Now, if the parts won't be pressurized, use good old epoxy, not CA. CA doesn't get along very well with PET (the material used to make those bottles) and although it may actually bond, the bon won't be strong. Another alternative for no pressurized bonds is PVC adeshive.
Here's a page with counless links realted to Water Rockets:

Hope this helps,
