Pilotx1: nice setup! I want to get a wagon type deal like you have. Did you make yours? Where do you source the steering linkage from?

Yes I built mine. There are no steering linkages as such the build sheet is as follows, its not gonna be a totally complete list but it will include all major components ill be leaving out hardware for now but can post it if anyone wants that too

10ft of 1"tubular nylon webbing-used for rockclimbing so its strong and cheap from a good sporting goods store
1x 5"swivling caster for the front wheel
1/2"x11"x28" pine board as the main body that everything attaches to
2x 5.5" wheels drilled out to accept a 3/8"ID bronze bushing for durabulity
3/8" all thread rod for the axel about 16"long
2x 90deg unistrut brackets-these are gonna be expensive to buy and might not be widely available but a good hardward store should be able to get em
the box is from walmart and cost me $15 its the 22" in long one, the barcode sticker on it says: 22015 BLACK/YELLOW it comes with a tray which i dont use and the nylon pouches which i use most of em
hangar9 manual fuel pump
Slimline Pro-connection F1 fuel bottle cap
4 peices of 2" 90deg aluminum stock cut to fit the indents on the box and anchor it in place
assorted hardware as needed

Default RE: Post your field flight boxes!

here are more pics of the box
I cut slots into the side of the box with a dremel to accomodate the strap that holds the fuel bottle. The strap is a 1" spring buckle type and similar ones are available at walmart also
The cart also has a wing holder that was sized to hold the wing on my avistar but also happens to work for the wing
since Ive swtiched over to low wing planes at the moment I will be adding a trailing hitch to the axel to tow my planes by their tailwheel, Ill post an update of that when Ive added a workable hitch

Great box Kmot.

Here is one I made the other day, its made of 9 ply Baltic Birch rabbit and dado'd. The leg supports are made of solid Maple. The cost including hardware was around 40.00. I noticed a box like this on Ebay a while back and thought it a good idea. I made mine much bigger though. It is 16x16x24, it will hold everything including the radios. (I am 6'4 280, not real worried about the weight) I drive a pickup so the folding leg idea didn't seem all that important. (ever try to open folding legs while carrying something weighing around 40lb?) I have been out of the RC hobby for a few years on a sojourn into the real world (Divorce, remarried, etc) and am now trying to get back into the hobby. The shop in the background is my RC workshop...........well...not really, I own a small custom cabinet and countertop business. But I can make whatever I darn well please in there. (Its good to be the boss)
Glad I found this forum, you all seem like...........well....likable. Thanks for sharing your idea on field boxes. I learned a few things.

Prop Nut: super looking custom box! I like the idea of a seperate leg stand that the box can be set upon. Very clever thinking! I also never thought about opening folding legs on a large box that weighs 40-50 pounds but good point!

The one thing I regret about my box is that the wood was selected at random and put in the kit box. So it doesn't match and even has that big football shaped knot or patch, whatever it is. I really like the wood boxes that have uniformly finished wood, like yours. Much nicer looking!

Anyway, congrats on a great looking flight box!

You want to see ugly, you should see my ex wife.....................er............wrong forum. Sorry.

My box also has the football patches, I put them to the inside though. Baltic birch plywood is a great material to use, very strong and not alot of wieght. You can find it at just about any local woodworkers supply. It comes in 5' by 5' sheets. Dont ask me, they are Russian, guess it makes sense over there. You should see the sunny day we are having, I am going flying this afternoon. Going to drag my daughter along. She needs a little torture in her life. Make her go outside, think of the horror. [>:]

Good meeting you at the field today. Prop Nut. Your box looks great. I got the idea for my box from another thread here. I don't see this idea in this thread. If you are too busy building/rebuilding planes to build a field box you can't beat the rolling plastic toolboxes available at the hardware store.

yeah, those are nice. I just use getto boxes, you know, the old style plastic, ones with the tray at the top. No wheels, I don't have to much high tech stuff I take to the field, I leave it all at home. But yeah, I like regular toolboxes, cheap. Like me. hehe

It was good to meet you today also David. You have me thinking about EP now. I brushed the dust of a kit I had half built 6 years ago. Some of the pieces are missing but most are there. The model is 70% done now. Why else would I be up at 12 am?
Its the MidStar 40 I mentioned. Should be fun to try out.

Getting back to what this thread is supposed to be about, that box isnt anywhere as heavy as I thought it would be. I think I had everything loaded in it today. (except paper towels and windex, had a goowey mess to clean off the plane when I got home ). I was real happy that it held the plane so well and was easy to use. I like the layout of those tables the club built but at my height they are a little short to tinker with motor or servo settings. Well, I am going to check the classifieds for a few things and head for bed. Again, it was good to meet you.

Default Have my cake, and can now eat it too!

Problem I've had is on really nice days, I want to take the convertible to work. But if it's that nice, I want to sneak out and grab a couple of flights in at lunch time and/or on the way home. Until my "ultimate" field box was done I couldn't do both. Inspired by others, but works for me!

Here are the particulars:
[ul][*] Stanley 3 part tool box (on wheels!) from Sams Club. Bottom tilt out bin removed.[*] 330 CCA Lawn tractor battery[*] Hobbico Field Charger MK II[*] Hobbico Mini Panel[*] Cigarette Lighter Adapter (For cell phone)[*] 2 fused circuits, room for 2 more[*] Removable Fuel tray. Holds (2) 1/2 Gallons of fuel & electric fuel pump Also has small compartment for bug spray, after-run oil, spray cleaner.[*] 3 coats polyurethane
[/ul]

The fuel tray is only stowed for transport. It is removed for fueling and charging, to ensure adequate airflow. I'll be adding another banana plug receptacle soon, the one I started to install cracked when I over-torqued the connector (that's what you get for working after 1 in the morning!). I'm still toying with different ways to install a cradle.

Notice that the plane is seat-belted in and how perfectly it fits in the back seat. I think I'll be building one or two more 48" winged planes!

Stu, that is a wicked setup you made! Awesome!! First I have seen of a wooden field box combined with a composite field box. Really quite excellent! [sm=thumbup.gif]

I was going to build a rolling platform for my big box "ala Pilotx1" but I found a much simpler and easier way. A Radio Flyer wagon.

I thought about using a wagon but after pricing them out since I didnt have one and the option of stealing the little kids down the block was out I went the platform rout, the wagon i think would be a bit more stable but ive yet to have any tippage problems

Pilotx1, nice looking box, have you ever thought about pneumatic tires? might make the ride smoother.

Here's mine.

edit in:

I started to go with the Radio Flyer but I didn't like the idea of those hard rubber tires beating up my planes, I picked this one up at Harbor Freight on sale for $39.00

I have thought about it and will probably go that route when the rear wheels need to be replaced which isnt too far off cause the bushings in em are getting wobbly, i wasnt worried too much about the bouncing cause my planes dont actually ride on the cart, I made a trailer hitch of sorts that holds the tailwheer of my planes and I transport them from the car to the field that way, or I carry by hand.
