Default SIG FOURSTAR 120 Opinion

Hey guys I recently purchased a Four star 120, I have never had any experiences with a fourstar.. I have heard they are good slow down, take it easy flying airplanes, I bought it to slow the pace down every once in a while, anyway I was wondering what a good engine is to put on this bird, a big 2 stroke like a moki 1.35 etc, or a big 4 stroke like a 1.20 or 1.50 etc. I would just like to hear some opinions thanks guys....

I've heard problems with the Moki 135. Here's a good list to start:

OS 160FX
Saito 180
Moki 180

The Moki has a slight edge on power and is a little heavier than the OS and Saito.

i've had my 4* 120 for several years and I use a very old pre-surpass
1.20 . Even with the old engine it still has enough for this plane but I
guess it all depends on how you fly and what you want

I have had ,flown ,or built that whole line of planes from Sig.
All have had 4 strokes of the recommended size and all have been
an enjoyable experience. A real delight to fly.

I wonder if a 120 fourstroke would hover it or would it take a 150,, I know this plane is not for 3D but just wondering.......

I have a 4*120. I really like flying the plane and I fly it quite often. I have a Gas engine in mine, A G-23 and 16x8 prop. It makes a very good sport plane and has plenty of power, but not enough to hover for a while or 3D. Mine has a cowl on and wheel pants which makes it look a little nicer.

I doubt anybody buys a 4*120 for 3D. Save the big guns for some other hovering rocket ship. Any 1.20 2 or 4stroke will power the 4*120 just fine. Up to a 1.50 will give more than enough power for conventional aerobatics. I have seen an O.S. 1.08 fly a 4*120 very well.

I have a framed up 4*120 coming and will most likely be using an ST G-2300.

I'me flying mine with an OS 1.08 at 9000' altitude here in Colorado. Flys like a dream at 1/2 throttle. Don't expect any 3D flying though. Balanced with the battery under the tank and no extra weight.

I realize it has no 3D capability's but I was just making sure I had enough power for the classic stall on landing, inverted flight, vertical upline power etc.... I am enjoying the info, I have never had a 4 stroke and was sorta wanting to try one, but a big 2 stroke might be fun also...my best friend has a saito100 and it is a monster,,,, so a 120 or a 150 would be crazy ,,, but I don't really know...

I would disagree with those who say this plane has no 3D ability. I don't fly 3D myself, but a couple of years ago I saw a Four Star 120 do an impressive 3D routine with a Saito 180 for power.

I wonder if a saito 150 would give it some 3d capabilities

Yes an old O.S. 1.20 will hover mine just fine, it doesn't pull out like a rocket but is plenty of power to pull out of the hover. For what it's worth I think the 4* is a great all around plane and will hover very nicely and at the same time can be flown around nice and lazy like all day long they are very relaxing planes to fly.

I run a ST 3000 on mine. With a 20x8 spinning at 7600, it will hover and pull out but not exactly like a rocket. Love this combo! I can barely get a harrier (elevator) attitude, but it wont hold......so low on the deck hovers are near impossible. The to the root ailerons help in the hovers.

Have fun, its my do everything airplane. Anyone know who makes floats for this plane? Mine weighs between 12 and 14 pounds depending if I am running smoke or not.

I had a 4 Star 120 for about 13 years, powered by a pre Surpass OD 120. Without a doubt this engine supplied more than enough power for most aerobatics.

Unfortunately by trusty 120 met witha "dumb thumb" demise. I looking forward to getting one of the new 120 ARF's.

Enjoy your 120.

Has anyone used a O.S. BGX-1 for power on this plane?

Hey Jon, how you doing I sort of did a kit bash on my 4*120, I know, you've probably seen the pics. I'm still pretty proud of this bird. Due to the kit bash, mine is HEAVY [X(], I don't remember right now what it is though. I have a Saito 150 GK in it inverted with a Graupner 15x8 3 blade on it. I can tell you it flys great, has plenty of power for the scale type of flying I do with it, and it's still capaple of just about everything except a hover . I split the aileron's and installed about 10 or 12" of flaps on both sides. I guess my biggest problem is it is such a floater when your trying to land, it just wants to keep flying and flying . It tried to do a semi-scale version of AirTractors 802F, which is a Single Engine Air Tanker for fighting forest flyers. I load up the slurry bay with either 2 cups of flour or baby powder, and do simulated slurry drops. Even with the added 'slurry' I have no problems with the Saito doing anything I want it to do. Great relaxing plane to fly[8D].

Been to any new fields lately

A good Thunder Tiger 120 is a cheap power solution for the 4*120. It will hover the 120.

I had a 12.5 lb 4*120 for a while that I got second hand. I was flying it with an old Pre Surpass OS 120 as well with a 15x6 wood prop and 15% fuel. It was just about perfect and with the 24oz tank I could fly quite nearly for days.

It was quite nice to have around but just tooooooooo big for me and my small car so I let the air frame go just recently.

Has anyone recently bought a Sig Four Star 120 kit? If so how was your wood cutting especially in respect for the ribs? I just opened my kit that I bought over the holiday and while the plywood was lazer cut the balsa ribs were not. In fact the ribs were die stampped and only about 1/3 of the way through the wood making it necessary to cut all ribs individually with an Xacto knive. I paid $165 for a kit that is very poorly cut and in fact looks like it was stored someware for about 15 years.

i am knee deep int it now, same problems you see. my trailing edge skins, alerons would make better skis than what they are suppose to. oh don't lay a straight edge on your blue print, it will leave you scratching your head on wing not being bult straight. yes the plywood is nicely cut but doesn't fit. have to sand almost every joint. i beleive i could scratch build it quicker. i was think that i was just spoiled building a top flight kit, man it was nicely done. received this sig kit and now wish i just bought the prints. only to excited to fly the plane, going gas 26cc.

I contacted Sig about the ribs. They told me that they have a new person die cutting the ribs and he needed more training! The lady in customer services said she would have the ribs re-cut and replace the unacceptable ones which she did and they were properly cut. I also asked her why some parts were laser cut and some die cut and she didn't know. Also, they claim that they are doing the laser cutting at the Sig manufacturing plant but my 4Star 60 kit had "made in Italy" stamped on the kit wood? Other kits have "made in China" ~ very confusing.

My question is however, why should the ribs or any other issue be so wrong in the first place? This is a $166 kit from a company that has been doing kit manufacturing for a very long time. The Four Star 60 kits are just fine so why can't they do the same with their other kits? I doubt that I will buy another Sig kit especially along with the things you mentioned.

I agree on the plans comments too. I am keeping them however incase I want to build another one from scratch.

Good luck. I am putting a Super Tigre G2300 in this 120.

I have one of the ARFs with a MLD-28 on it. Started with a SPE-26, but the MLD turns the same prop ~1200 rpm faster. If I were buying one today, I'd be going with a DLE-30.

The MLD-28 will pull it vertically out of sight - slowly.

I purchased my 4*120 in feb 2010, everything in the kit was just about perfect except the ailerons needed a little sanding to straighten them.
I chose to sheet the leading edges and will sheet the aft cockpit turtledeck.

Happy flyin', Oscar
