Default Landing with damage

seeing as the weird planes thread is going well, lets have another.
we've all seen pics like this.
but how many of you have had something fail, or hit someone else, and still bring it back for a safe landing?
I've had 2.
first was a glider tow that went wrong that took my tail off, the glider broke away, and left me tumbeling towards the sea, then it bunted, if it can climb.. it can fly, thinking back to power for height i flipped it up side down and flew it back on throttle, turned into the wind over the patch and lowered the throttle, probably my softest landing yet. oh yer, and this was at a public display and i got a round of appluse, but it was easy really

second was the other week, a head on 150 MPH with my Outlaw and a Gangster, i left my wingtip in his wing and took off half his tail on the way though, we both landed safely, that was lucky.
I got my tip back and gluded it back on LOL
pics of that one can be seen at ww.rcflyers.fsnet.co.uk

This pic came from http://www.ixpres.com/ag1caf/B-17/contents.htm and is well worth a look, some amazing pics here and nicely laied out

SO, LETS SEE YOUR PICS and hear your storys

This link to the dammage site has been edited due to links to porn kindly pointed out by Depfife.
it now takes you past the Web ring page and straight onto contents. when i said amazing pics nicely laid, i didnt mean that
I'll contact the sites owner to let him know, but i'm guessing the problem is with the WW2 ring its self.
The thread is going great tho and keep pics of your BALSA! models comming

And jut to prove i dont go home just because i lost the tail, when i lost the tail in a proghang crunch, i added my box wrench to the nose for weight, and flew again.

Lost all the rear tailfeathers about 80 feet up at the other end of the field, somehow got it down in one piece with zero damage. Retreived the lost parts only to find that the elevator had sustained sheep damage - got trod on. Flew the next day after I used GLUE to hold it all on!

Im glad you saw this chris, i thought i had that pic and was gonna put it in and not my manx, but i just couldnt find it.

Moral of the story peeps, dont go mad if you lose your tail in flight, careful throttle control and you might save it.
That means you Marky Johns, i said use throttle not full throttle lol, BUNT BUNT! run phil.....

Lets be honest now you did a bit more than that . You also added tweaked a bit of reflex into the ailerons, appears to be about 12/15 degrees.

Default Landing with damage

This is my diamond dust after its second flight, i think it must have come loose on the front on the first landing and then on the second it ripped off in a dive, this was only 20 seconds into the flight, so i went around slow to make sure it was ok, and carried on flying, i'd only brought the dust and i wasnt goning to go home that soon, now recovered with solartex and solarfilm and well sealed.

Come on people, you must have pics of your planes you got home. post them up

Default lANDING WITH DAMAGE

After my buddy Kamikazied his trainer through my right wing I pretty much had given the TT G200 up as a lost cause. Then I heard from the pits a call "Hey, it's still trying to fly". Sure enough, it was, and with a masterly effort born of years flying with terribly out of trim airplanes, I wrestled it out of the air onto the runway and taxied it back to the pits.

Default Landing with damage

hey, it still had a leading edge to puh the air about
this is what i like .
i've seen the same plane get hit by a twin star and the knock broke the tail, it landed, and the display pilot decided he might as well kill it and stamped on the wing, then his mate came over, the ripped the fin off, cynoed it to the back of the wing, dialed in elevons and took off, it went great, and the snapped wing bent on every flip, great fun lol. tho... im not sure display pilots should be doing this at events, and flying 6 planes the same, fast and close together.. isnt that asking for trouble?

Default How's this

Went in full bore after loosing the radio. Replace the wing bolts, receiver and went racing again. This is exactly what we found when we went to pick up the pieces, sitting exactly as it is in the picture.

Default Christen Eagle midair with Goldberg Eagle

This is a picture of my Byron Christen Eagle after a head-on midair collision with a Goldberg Eagle. The "landing" caused no further damage, and the Sachs 2.6 was still idling!

The Goldberg Eagle passed through the spinning prop of the Christen Eagle and was completely destroyed.... even the engine and radio got chopped up. The pilot of the Goldberg Eagle was left with only a transmitter.....nothing else.

At first glance, it just looks like a broken cowl and prop. But if you look closer, you'll see the wing spar of the Goldberg Eagle wedged between the landing gear and the top wing of the Christen Eagle. What you can't see here is that the fuselage is completely broken in half behind the wings, and only the remaining pull-pull control cables kept the tail section from falling off inflight.

If you want to see more photos and read a more detailed description of my Christen Eagle midair, go to this page on my web site:

Default Landing with damage

im in Cornwall, and a member of the Redruth & District Model Flying Club. www.rcflyers.fsnet.co.uk
the flying last year was a washout coz of those damn cows, but our shows back this year and promises to make up for last year.
i better just add, my story about the display pilot wasnt at our club. it was at a club with a well known display that are so safety consious its funny, but its amazing what they'll let a 'display team' get away with, taking off in pits behind the start box? ummm i know you get thrown out of club for that.

our club? we very well behaved, we get drunk after the display and go flying in the dark without lights lol

Now that is a midair! good reason to have pull, pull hey
I'll go and have a look at your page in a mo.

I've seen a similar crash at another of our displays about 4 years ago. Steve Vine was flying his Titan glider tug, and was talking to a friend, and didnt see Terry Davies funfly, went straight though it, no more fun fly and a sick sounding Titan, he brought it round, landed, taxied back to the pits, the only dammaged appered to be a broken prop, but as he stoped the engine the whole firewall just fell off LOL poor steve, 2 years ago he crashed his demon and then accidently ran over the slightly dammaged plane that evening

Just seen that page.. one word WOW! you a lucky guy, how big was the other eagle compaired to yours?

Default Landing with damage

Heres one from a display last weekend.
i was on club trainer duty, another member was talking to the kiddies and i just had to take over.
litle girls doing the usale over react thing and rolling, i dont mind, it was ok and shes having fun, then a little dive and SNAP!!!!! and it starts spinning down, the wings gone right at the root. i throttled back to save the engine, and gave aileron, elevator and rudder to get the slowest possible impact speed... then it pulled out slowely!
i kept it near stall speed and headed back to the tiny cut strip with the wind comming over a hedge behind me, yes, landing at this dosplay was a nightmare, but it was a perfect 3 point landing my best of the whole show! lol
it just shows theres no subsitute for luck, and experiance.
ya know, it dosnt look so bad in that pic
