Stu Richmond (R/C Report) plauged by Viruses
Poor Stu,
After last months treatise on unquestioned superiority of Mode I, in this
months' (10/04) column he is plagued by VIRUSES. Viruses so bad they killed
his iMac computer. Now he is working with a "very expensive" E-Mac and to
protect himself from viruses he will not accept any attachments from readers
for his Just Plane Fun column in R/C Report. Don't they make anti-virus
programs for Macs? [:-]He wants digital photos sent to him on a CD to his home
address. Can't you stick a virus on a CD along with anything else? [>:]

Maybe the "viruses" you are referring too, are all of the military pilots that wrote in telling him that their fighter jets are not in his preferred mode?

Tell him to get some anti-virus software!
My company bought another company, and alot of the graphics people use them fancy pants Macs. Being the IT guy I have to work on them, but dread it. I haven't used an Apple since I was in 5th grade, and don't much care for them. Everyone says that Mac's are immune to viruses, me personally I doubt it. Thing is Windows is so popular, virus writers (Read: Symantec and Mcafee) code based on the windows platform. Why write a virus that would only affect 2% of the world when you can write one for 95+%?
This is what he gets for Mode one superiority complex. Karma is a beeoch
My $.02

Yes, there are anti virus software programs for mac. Norton, McAfee etc all make Mac versions.
If all people are sending him are ".jpgs" i.e. pictures, I can't see how he could get a virus. Of course, if it's sent as a "stuft" file, I guess someone could package a virus that activates while he's unstuffing.
Is he sure he had viruses? Could it have been something else?

People send viruses as anakornikovianaked.jpg.exe
Now your computer sees this as anakornokovianaked.jpg and ignores the last part of the extention, but it is really an exe file. You really wanna see her naked [X(] and open it. BLAMO! you are now infected.
virus writers deserve a slow painful death by getting hit the the nards with a spinning prop (to keep the RC relation going).

A file labeled ".jpg.exe" is not a .jpg file so obviously, there's some education and awareness that has to happen on the end users part. As far as I know, most Mac's don't know what to do with .exe files so even if it opened it, the file would never "execute".
That's why I questioned if it was actually a virus.
Of course I've been wrong before

You all missed the point. Who cares if he has a Mac, the point here is, sending a virus is no civil way of approving or disapproving someones opinon!
This unbelieveable! Just because a guy likes mode 1, we send him a virus??????
PEOPLE IT'S JUST A HOBBY!!!!!!!

Ben Flyn,
I did not take this to mean modelers were purposely sending infected files. If you are infected you will send infected files without you personally being aware of it. Couple years ago my brother-in-law had not updated his anti-virus protection and the virus read his address book. The whole family as a result found out if their anti-virus protection was up to date.

Ben,
I also didn't take the meaning of this to be people sent him viruses on purpose. That would indeed be a shame. I offered the information because I have my doubts about his problem being a virus considering he has a Mac.
Crash,
Good info. Macs, though, have no clue what a .exe file is. Of course there are software programs you can buy to open them, but in general, a .exe is unuseable on a Mac.
I have heard that viruses can be hidden in macros in Word and Excel files. Again, considering he has a Mac, I'd question the "virus" aspect of his problems. It's just not that big of an issue with Macs. In fact, my computer guy came in yesterday and said most of his business these days is virus issues..... but not on Macs.

I think Stu has missed the point.
If I got syphillis, I wouldn't swear off of women. Why ruin your computing experience because some slime-ball sent you a virus? If you need to see the picture, open it! Let your anti-virus software do its' job. If it doesn't, replace it!
If (when, that is) I got a virus, I simply removed it, reloaded, or whatever was required to move on. Me and my family of four manage to install very darn few. I run Spybot and Adaware to remove spyware, and run anti-virus software on rare occasions. While the Anti-spyware software ALWAYS finds something, the anti-virus rarely does.
Note to Stu:
DUMP IE get Mozilla/Opera/ etc.
Be careful what you open/ be aware of the risk.
Run Anti-virus software always if you are in a 'HIGH-RISK' situation, come to think of it, even when you are not.
Backup all important data on a second drive, keep a good image there too so that you could re-load without re-install.
Learn to hate Virus writers!

If you are still running AdAware on a PC, update to AdAware SE relased a few days ago. Still free and it picked up 16 new threats.
