Integration of racing and aerobatics?
Could this be a new sport in competition RC, or a new event for funflies? This from the AOPA Member's Webpage:
Aerobatic air racing comes to Reno
Sept. 29 — Top aerobatic pilots now have a new playing field. In its U.S. debut in September, the Red Bull Air Race World Series Championship crowned American Mike Mangold as the top pilot. It was held in conjunction with the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada. Unlike a typical air race, Red Bull pilots, one at a time, execute a series of aerobatic maneuvers around a course marked by five inflatable pylons as the clock ticks away. There is also an obstacle requiring pilots to touch down on a 12-by-36-foot target zone. While Kirby Chambliss was the pre-race favorite, Mangold pulled it out in the end after two days of racing in windy conditions. Both pilots flew Edge 540s. American Mike Goulian and Hungarian Peter Besenyei were finalists. Besenyei clipped one of the 50-foot pylons during his knife-edge run through Gate 3, bringing it down and incurring a 10-second time penalty. The event in Reno served as the final championship round. Chambliss won the first round in the United Kingdom, beating Besenyei by .03 seconds. Chambliss also won the second round race in Budapest, Hungary, where the course was set on the Danube River and contestants actually flew underneath a bridge.
I can think of many possibilities to introduce this in existing RC competition (IMAC, SCAT, Pattern, Fun Sport), what are your thoughts?
Erich

I have been trying to tell the guys at our field about this. I even linked the Red Bull air races site to our site.
It is an awesome video of the plane going through the course.
Some one should come up with pylons that would not bring an r/c plane down if hit. I think that would be cool.

Helium balloons tethered by paper streamer material would do just fine as pylons. Hell, at the end of the contest, see who can wipe out the most balloons in one pass, get 5% more points.
Now that I have seen the video, this would be very challenging for RC. I didn't know they had to fly BETWEEN two pylons at every "gate". A sure test of depth perception.
In any case, sure beats nuthin but left turns.
