Default Attention Members! If RCU had a RSS (XML) feed would you use it?

Want to get an idea of how many mebers would use an RSS feed if we provided one here on RCU? What is RSS? you can learn about it here:

http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html

But if you don't know and don't care now you can vote that way too.

Below is a sample of what RSS would look like when integrated into yahoo. This can be done with just a couple clicks too!

Update: We do have a fully functional RCU feed in place for you guys to play with.

I am using the RSS feed provided. However, there are some changes that I would like...

Can we get a custom feed that will only show posts for MyForum? I would really like reduce the number of posts that are coming in from RCU as I am not interested in cars, boats, etc...

Also, I would not be against a small text advertisement in the feed if it meant that the full text of a post is in the feed.

what we would do is make an airplane feed, a car feed, an electric feed, a boat feed, a heli feed and an "All" feed.

I don't see why we could not incorporate the full text into the feed. I'll look into that if it looks like there is some demand for this.

For those of us not so intellectually adept at compugeekese, what the hell IS a RSS (XML) feed, anyway?

RSS feeds are news aggregators. With a RSS reader (consumer), you can grab feeds from as many sites as interest you. It aggregates them together into one location, sortof like you can do with my.yahoo.com. But you have a larger selection of choices if you set up your RSS reader rather than use something like yahoo. You can get blogs, forum posts, news items that are specific to what you want (i.e. techie, environmental news, etc). It is a way to save you time from having to go to RCU to see what the latest posts are. Each post contains a link to the full story.

If you want to try it, here is a free RSS reader you can try out: [link=http://www.rssbandit.org]RSS Bandit[/link]

Update: We do have a fully functional RCU feed in place for you guys to play with. This will feed all recent forum posts into the rss. If it looks like there is enough interest we would make one for each area of interest (cars, planes, helis, etc) and also another for the marketplace. Possibly even one for RC related news and stuff.

I'm probably missing something, but I don't see any advantages. I like the system as is.

they system would not change. this is just an add on for those who also use RSS feeds. if you dont use them you wouldn't even know we had them. nothing would change on the site.

RSS is the best thing since sliced bread for those of us that regularly deal with daily changing information as a means of business.

With RSS, you can...

- List multiple news feeds in a single application, load them when online, then read them when offline
- Syndicate content. If I had a personal RC website, and I wanted to give a small sample of the content going through the RCU forums, it would be trivial, provided the RCU License allows this (Creative Commons is very cool).
- strip the content from the interface, thus reducing server load, and increasing user interface consistency between different information sources.

As an example, I subscribe to many RSS feeds. Some individual's weblogs, some that have grown to more. They tend to do a better job of unspinning the news than the major networks. I do realize that every author has spin, but it is not nearly as heavy. I am able to combine several authors that I trust, with all facets of American life represented. This becomes a single news source, which I consider better than the drivel that is spit out on nightly news every night.

Without RSS, this would be impossible, because I would be checking many websites for updates every day. With RSS, the new posts appear at the top, and the older posts go to the bottom.

I just found the RC Universe RSS feed... what a great idea. I would love to only include posts from specific forums on our site.

Take a look at our R/C club page if you want to see how we are using the RC Universe RSS feed. It's on the right hand side of the page... scoll down a little and you will see it.

I seem to be getting an error trying to get this feed. I can get others, just not this one.

The RSS Feed works fine: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rss.asp

If you want to see how our Club Website Page uses the feed, take a look at: http://www.nurcac.org (Northern Utah Radio Controlled Aircraft Club)

Look on the right hand side of the home page under the calendar.

It's a great idea and I hope RC Universe continues to support and make the RSS feed available. Options to limit the feed to specific forums would be great.

dicknadine, did you even read the original posts? You might consider reading the previous posts before commenting on something you know nothing about. (by your own admission)

Ok, I just got a different reader, it seems to be working ok.

I got the "RssReader". It is smaller than the other one I was using, and is a little simpler, but I can get all the feeds I want.

Matthew-

Nice job on the website and good thinking to use RSS this way. I had not seen that done before in this way, and if you have an active club website it's a nice idea.

I am going to delve into a forum filter option this week or tonight even possibly. It should be doable.

Custom forum modification is done.

To use this simply modify the url for the feed as follows:

The original url will display all forums:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rss.asp

To limit to ONLY the forums you want simply use the url below and add on the forumid for those forums you want to appear in a comma seperated list. The example below illustrates this:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rss....40,145,164,222

You can add as many or as few as you want. To get the forumid of any forum simply pass your mouse over the forum name from the forum homepage. For example passing your mouse over the Clubhouse you will see this link:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/The_...mid_190/tt.htm

This shows the Clubhouse forumid is 190

Have fun!

Very nice on the forumid params!

I have updated our R/C Club Website with three sections for the RCU RSS feeds, Airplanes, Electrics and Helis:

http://www.nurcac.org (look on the right side of the home page below the calendar)

By the way, this could save someone else some time.... here are the forum id's for these three forums:

Airplanes: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rss....80,192,196,200

Electrics: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rss....62,182,198,317

Helis: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rss....05,215,216,218

It took a little time getting the forum id's but this gives total flexability with the RSS feed.

BTW..we will be keeping the RSS permanently for those who want to use it.

For those not technically oriented don't worry. If you don't know what this is it won't affect you in any way and you won't see any changes or differences here on RCU. RSS only deals with allowing remote sites to pull data from our forums.

Another option that would be very helpful would be to limt the number of items/posts returned. What do you think about adding a 'maxitems' option? i.e. maxitems=5 would only return the 5 latest posts. Or maybe call the param 'maxposts'?

This would be nice for how we are using the RSS feed at http://www.nurcac.org

I could control how many items we are displaying as the consumer, but it would make more sense to control this at the source of the feed.

What do you think? Scope creep???

Matt
