Default Scams

I have seen a lot of threads posted where someone asks the question !QUOT!is this a scam i am trying to sell a plane and have received this email!QUOT! in the email the so called buyer says he has a check for $8000 and wants to buy your plane (most of us have herd it by now). there is a great website which tells all about these scams that are on-line. and a forum with a lot of new ones that are coming from Nigeria. the web address is www.scamvictimsunited.com and another website with more advisories is for the US secret service www.secretservice.gov/alert419.shtm
just thought some of you may be interested. just remember seller beware. if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

Although it is still obvious, this is one of the more inconspicuous scams out there. This individual is looking for bank account information :

Please be careful how you present your reply. Someone might confuse Propflipper (me ) as the scammer by the way you presented your remark. okenamoney16 is the screen name of the questionable post.

Maybe some people here in the USA can begin scamming those people in Nicaragua by telling them that they inherited a large estate from their long-lost aunt who has the same last name as they do.

Maybe something like this (typos included):

Dear Dr. Clement Nicaragua Scammer Oknon
Your Great Aunt died last week and has left her entire family estate valued at $3,782,839.00 to you. In adddition, you will inherritt her jewelry, automobiles, bank accounts that currently total $12,058,739,48 in cash funds, two safe deposite boxes of unknown value, threee life insurance policies valued at another $2,000,000.00, and three cats. Don't worry, your aunts funeral expenses were already paid for by seperate burial policiees she had, so all these funds mentioned are cleared for you.

Please contact me immmediately to begin the tranxfer of these funds to you. To begin the process, we require a mere $4,400.00 in admin fees. This transaxtion will aslo require your presence at our bank. I can arange a very comfortble stay for you and your guest, if nneded, at a nearby hotel.

Sincerely,
John Q. Public-Smith III
President of Large Bank USA

Oh crap! Yes, I fell for that one too! But I bought that at a 50% discount. So, I was lucky!

After a long investigation, it turned out to be one of the disgruntled Keebler Elves that also sold off the Keebler cookie recipes, which I also bought.
Damn, it sounded so legit!

Oh no!!!!! Uncle Joe died! He was my favorite uncle! I'm so upset ....[] Poor Uncle Joe! I was named after him. My name is also, Joe Keebler. Uncle Joe is/was my fathers brother. This is such a shock to learn of his passing.
What will I do? What will I do!

Here is something I recieved from someone when I was trying to sell my fish tank.

Hello !

I really appreciate your response to my mail, and I want you to
please consider that its sold to me. Actually now I'm not in town, so
i will want you to please let's do this deal like this because i wont
be able to meet with you to see the item but am OK with the price and
condition as seeing on your posted advert. Please do withdraw the
advert from Craigslist to avoid disturbance, and I'll proceed in
issuing a Certified check to you and when you received the check, I
will make arrangement for pickup.

So I will need you to provide me the following information to
facilitate the mailing of the check..

1...Your Full Names:
2...Your physical home residential address to post the check:
3...City, State & zip code/Postal Code:
4...Your Tel-# {Home & Cell } to contact you:
5...And the last price of the item:

And as soon as this is provided, the payment will be overnight to you
and i will let you know when its mailed out.

*** And Note that the payment will be shipped to your address via
FED-EX OR UPS NEXT DAY SERVICE and I will like you to know that you
will not be responsible for shipping i will have my mover come over as
soon as you have cashed the check**

Thanks

I simply replyed to the e-mail with "How about you just let me know when you get back in town."  Low and behold I have not heard from them since.

That sounds like a typical Nigerian scam (a 419 letter). Here is a good site to get an idea of the types of scams they use.

http://www.quatloos.com/cm-niger/nig...ter_museum.htm

Some people think it is fun to mess with these scammers and string them along but some groups have been known to be vindictive and have murdered people. The best advice is to completely ignore them and they will go away.

A little trick that I use. Check the member's profile. If they have zero postings in the forums, I pass. The rest are obvious 419 scams.

Why are these scammers always the worst spellers in the world, and why doesn't that fact tip folks off?

About the only way I'd do that is if the buyer pays up front (credit card), even then I wouldn't ship anything I couldn't stand to lose, say over $100 or so. The single feedback is the red flag.
