arava airshow - israel
on the 25/26 feb 2005 we are having our annual rc airshow and national competition in the arava desert in the south of israel just below the dead sea - we expect a crowd of atleast 15000 people and as it's the beginning of spring we should have great weather.
we are hosting a european contingent with seven rc jets this year and this alone promises to be outrages - these pilots are super professionals and do some spectacular formation flying and great show aerobatics - further more we have a host of scale planes and special planes to excite the crowd and then we have our own contingent of invited 3d pilots and planes to show how we do our toc style stuffffff.
below some pics of the arava airhow 2003/2004

I really have to ask this due to your location, do you have to worry about terrorist activity?
That aside, looks like fun! 15000 people is good tunrout for an RC event. I didn't even think RC was that big over there! I look forward to seeing pics after the show is over.

RE: arava airshow - israel
hi guys - Dar Zeelon is a good friend of mine - sharp dude on the technical stuff - flies well too -
you guys only see the CNN version - we actually live pretty normal lives and ocupy our time productively instead of pondering on the news crap!! that said.
rc is a growing hobby/sport and as we are located right in the middle we get the stuff for the far east where most of the planes are made then we are right close to europe from where we tap product and marvelous technology and then we are the 52 state of the USA

Thanks for sharing the pics adrian-RCU. I especially like the third one with the 5 Phantoms. That had to look and sound fantastic. Did they fly in formation?

Well thank you for answering the question on your safety as I know a lot of wonder about that and do worry. The pictures of the 5 Phantoms is just great and really got my heart rate up as I love the plane. It and the F-100 along with the Skyraider pulled my bacon out of the fire many times in 'Nam and use to love to watch the Phantoms trying to take off from the strip at Cam Ranh Bay. They were loaded to the hilt and the heat and high humidity really made them take every inch of the runway and even then it was iffy if they would get airborne, love that Phantom.

Cool. I wonder how low were you at the field. The Dead Sea is like 1,300 feet below sea level. Hopefully no airplane crashes into the Dead Sea, lowest spot on land in the world. It is really salty. I hear the Dead Sea is rather warm even during winter because snow sometimes falls in Israel. [8D]

RE: arava airshow - israel
hey guys thanks for all the positive stuff - appreciated - problem we have is that only the bad stuff gets to the news and never the good and like i have said before we lead pretty normal lives. we are just very serious about safety and security. furthermore we are plane crazy because our skies are patrolled 24 hours a day so we see the f4's/f16/f14 and f15's also cobra's and apache's above us all day long. israel is only about 350 miles long and 50 miles wide so these planes buzz us all day long so now no wonder we take to RC.
yup we fly at about 700 feet below sea level - interesting and the dead sea is one of the natural wonders of the world just like the grand canyon - the water stays warm and because of the salt density you absolutely just float on top - but does it burn!!!! when you get it in the wrong places

Few pictures from last 2004 airshow. The Pilot , Alex Louw (also Adrian mentor and coach) and his Edge 540 and also jet Boomerang.
BTW my young friend Adrian is one of our 3D native talents.

Guys,
Jan is the big guy, 'hangin' off the tail' of the big Edge 540, which is being flown by the master, Alex Lau (Post #5).
Adrian is his son, standing next to him in a few other photos and one of the most talented pilots anywhere, despite his young age.
He is a great flyer and the designated test pilot where we usually fly.
He is going to be competing and demonstrating several planes, at the event.
The security situation in Israel is, in the recent past, not generally one which makes it too dangerous to go outside.
You can tour the country and you can attend large events like the Arava Airshow.
There are going to be security forces around, just to make sure no plans have to be changed.

F-14??!! that's news to me! and the last time i saw f-4s was over a year ago...lately just f-16s and the occasional f-15.
lots of cutbacks on airtime for the fuel hogs, and any dumbass ultralite pilot that causes fighters to be sent up now gets billed[X(]

The Arava airshow.
I missed it this time...
But others didn't...
Here is a relapse from last time.
Adrian (RCU) is hovering his big Ultimate and his dad, Jan, is again hanging off the tail...
This plane had a DA 150 cc engine, with a Bolly 32x10 prop up front.

missed it too but got to see a bunch on video...would have been nice to hear the jet engines instead of the announcer's constant yapping, even when he promised to shut his mouth for one of the aerobatic displays he broke down half way through and started yapping again
the pair of lavi jets were cool
