How many of you guys have took off with your TX aerial down?
Just wondering i nearly did once and my instructor (i was just starting out) had such a go at me i never did it again but i have heard about a couple of occasions at our club, once quick reactions saved the plane and one time not so lucky [] but i wonder how many times people have but not said anything?

I did shortly after I soloed with my LT-40. I took off and was turning parallel to the runway when my instructor came up behind me to pull the transmitter antenna up. I thought he was going to have a heart attack. I'd run the receiver antenna out of the cockpit behind the wing and up to the tail and never had a glitch.
I now make it part of my pre filght procedure to make sure the antenna is extended.

Twice in 9 years.
Both times I flew without a glitch. Caught it myself after one circuit the second time. First time I flew an entire flight without incident.
I too run the antenna out behind the cockpit and up to the top of the vertical stab. And I fly Futaba with high and low band receivers.

I hate to tell this on myself but 4 times in 3 years. One resulted in a crash. I'm going to get one of the short flexible antennas. Problem resolved.

Yep, I did it too (once). I was getting intermittent control problems. Fortunately, I didn't lose my plane before I fixed my oversight. Lucky for me. I taught myself how to fly - you would think I would have drilled that into my head better!

I've done it, but always notice as sson as I'm off.
Once, one of my students (Larry the Unteachable) took off with his TX BATTERY INDICATOR ALL THE WAY DOWN.
I asked him how his battery was doing, and he turned away from me and said "Uh, oh, well it's fine....just about the time I looked over his shoulder I saw it was in the red, he did a perfect figure 9- the only manouver he ever managed to master.

I did one better. I tossed a 100" sailplane off a hillside and noticed my antenna was not extended, so I started pulling it out and It came completly out of the transmiter[X(]. As I was staring at the antenna in my right hand, the plane flew back over my head and landed in a tree behind me. I'd rather be lucky than good any day.
