Default Why are RC events called "Fly-ins?"

Well.....why?

Now.. Osh kosh...THAT is a fly in...
but nobody actually flies in to an RC event...do they??

Shouldn't they be called something like an RC drive to, unpack, assemble, fly......in?

or something like that?

Always wondered.....

Just a few guesses:

Because "Love-In" was already taken

Because "A Bunch Of Grown Men Playing With Toy Airplanes" wouldn't fit on the posters

Fly In, sounds so much better than "Sitting around shooting the bull with the guys in". Good Luck, Dave

I know in some parts of the country, a fly-in is what a non-competition event is and a fun fly is for competition events that are either measured or timed. This helps to tell one event from the other.

Actually calling them fly-in's is nothing to do with flying. It's usually what you find "in" the potato salad during lunch

What else would you expect from a society that drives on
a parkway and then parks on a driveway ?

I think the name is a appropriate. We call them fly-ins because we might fly into things like trees, birds, toadstools, bedsheets, streamers, balloons, and if we have combat, another airplane.

A FlyIn is like a Dyslexic form of cooking or baking. With this, each indidividual ingredient is not very good by itself but when put all together, something good comes of it.

With a Fly In, you can have 50plus individual pilots, with their own individual styles, and types of planes in the air and nothing good can come from it but it is entertaining to say the least!

And we all know that Fly In really means, "A bunch of fellows sitting around shooting the breeze and drinking pop". Good Luck, Dave

Some possible origins:

Deep South- Hey ya'll, let's go down to the south 40 and so some fly-in.

Inner City- Yo, yo, yo, a plane would look fly in the hood.

Probably for the same reason the term drive-in is used. When people go to a Drive-in, they aren't talking about cars!

The better question is; why do we drive on parkways, but park on driveways?

I always thought the term originated in the late 60s or early 70s in immitation of sit ins, love ins, die ins, teach ins and be ins. It distinguished unstructured gatherings from contests.

Or not.

Who cares,,,, they are fun gathering's,,,, and you always have those guys who role up with their 24 foot enclosed trailers and unload 4 planes, and set them out there and talk about them all day and talk about other pilots but they never fly,,,,
