Wear those safety glasses!!
I thought I would remind everyone to wear HIGH quality safety glassses when using power tools. Last night I was grinding a screw head and nut to fit a particular application. I put on my trusty "old style" safety glasses (the old eyeglass style with side shields) , got out the dremel tool and grinding stone and proceeded to grind away the unwanted material. I was grinding away as usual and a good size metal splinter shot off and found it's way under the bottom rim of the glasses straight into my eyeball. The pain was unbelievable. It was past midnight and I was debating on going to the emergency room. I decided to go to bed and deal with it in the morning. Luckily I have a close friend who is an E.N.T. and he in turn called a friend that is an Optomologist. I got to go see him immediatly and after all is said and done (minor eye surgery), I'm typing this message with tears streaming down my face and a pumping headache. I am writing this so hopefully someone else won't have to go through what I just did. Get yourself a quality pair of safety glasses( the kind that makes a tight seal around the entire apparatus) and use them no matter what you are cutting or grinding.

great reminder! I'm sure many of us (including myself) get lazy sometimes and think "oh, this is gonna be quick, i won't bother w/ the glasses". and you bring up a good point to get some QUALITY saftey glasses...a few buck could sure save you some pain and agony!

I actually have a complete over the head turbine breather apparatus that I use when I'm doing heavy duty stuff on my jets. I can get to grinding with my face litterally two inches away from what I'm working on and have not only the safety shield in front of my face, but fresh outside air!

glasses are great, but the same precautions you use around a prop should be done for a dremel. stay clear of the path of anything that could possibly come off it, especially for cutoff disks, those things can explode!

This story is most sad ... funny if you have a warped sense of humour. One of the RC car guys was trying to tighten his cable tie and he used a needle nose plier to do it. He pulled towards himself, it slipped and he took out an eye ... yeah ... he lost an eye ... this hobby is not with toys.
