Hello again everyone,

I've been curious about where some of the RCM Regulars had gone off to. I know that Ken Willard had gone to that great hangar in the sky... Jerry Smith and Eloy Marez both pop in now and again to set us straight. MIke Lee and Clarence Lee are still writing, thankfully. I would love to see Jim Oddino and some of the others resurface and do some more of their writing for us.

I recently came across some sad news in the July 2004 issue of RCM about Chuck Cunningham. I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I think that he might have had Parkinsons, but I am not sure. In any event, here is the write-up that was in RCM.

If anyone can add anything about Chuck or any of the other missing writers, this would be a great place to share it.

In concurrence with Brian, Chuck Cunningham was amongst the great reasons to enjoy RCM. I am glad, Bob, that you brought up Jim Oddino. I think he was generally the electronics guru. I didn't have the knowledge or talent to build some of his electronic projects (or understand them for that matter), but it strikes me how low we have gotten on the scale of experimentation in the hobby. It really used to be driven by ingenuity, and craftsmanship. Now.....all that is nearly dead. If an ARF keeps people coming to the hobby fine (I question that), what kept me coming back is the building. Just to see something that you built fly very well, was exciting to me. If you could also make it attractive, and perform just a bit better....than doubly enjoyable. I hope our AMA mag will continue to have some build articles on any sort of flying model. I haven't bought our oldest remaining publication (M.A.N.) in some time, due to their faithless bowing down to trends (toy electric planes, not so toyish electrics....e.t.c.). It seems we need something like the old "Scale R/C Modeler back (fat chance). That was thin but good. People who think these online forums can supplant a magazine that someone picks up in a grocery store (not knowing they were even yet interested), don't understand. We are here because we are already interested. The point is to bring in people outside of that realm. Okay...I digress. -Eric Hanson

Hello Riddle and Thunderbolt....

Riddle, very good comments. You might be interested to know that I fell across a thread where guys are heavily modifying ARF's with some pretty good ingenuity - not just for cosmetics. I'll see if I can fall across that again. If some folks are reluctant to build from plans or a kit, this is, at least, something that would inspire some of the experimentation that you allude to - for the record, I am in complete agreement.

Brian, here's one for us... it wasn't a cover, it was for a plan called the Silent Squire. I think it's a new one...

Yup, a chap named catboater started this thread on July 2, 2005. A lot of material has been covered on these pages, and a lot of fun magazine covers too.

I keep hoping that someone with some magazine wherewithal (maybe RC Sport Flyer?) would pick up on some of the ideas we've discussed. I think that a full-fledged magazine like 'old' RCM would not fly (pardon the pun) in itself. But maybe if some of the ideas and columns were incorporated, I think that it would increase readership.

And yeah, there are a lot of folks who sign on to this thread just to see the magazine covers!!

I went to the beach once, and there was this girl sitting on the shore selling airplanes... I just HAD to take her picture...

Actually, this is part of a RCM Construction Article called 500ML in the Sept 1976 issue. No information on the larger of the two models... not that she is much larger than the smaller model.

Point is that maybe all of our magazines will be done. The internet will be it...just a collection of posts from people who may or may not be worth listening to. RCM had people worth listening to. I don't see too many focused construction articles online, or advice that you didn't know you needed to know. If you buy a magazine, information comes to you in a well planned way every month, and you run across things which you simply wouldn't have thought to even look up online. Magazines are healthy to our hobby, and particularly to newcomers! They wouldn't know where or what to even investigate; pick up any modeler magazine as a newbie and you get a reasonable clue quickly. Even avid and experienced modelers benefit from having things come to them in the way of magazine articles....and they didn't know they would be interested! The internet is great if you know what you want to find out. It isn't great at bringing things to your attention that you didn't expect or desire to research, or become interested in.

The issue isn't just RCM, but magazines that are "smaller readership". People magazine will be around, and other widely popular mags. Our hobby mags are another story, maybe.

Sheesh - Unsubscribe if you don't want to read about it. Great magazine and it is missed in the hobby. Some of us like to at least rummage through our memories of the "better" days.

I have a Frog and an Assault and a Porsche also; it looks like you are a car guy only. I have planes and boats also and enjoyed the diversity RCM provided in it's content. When cars became prolific, it resulted in separate magazines for that discipline, so RCM could not justify continuing coverage of cars. Maybe that is what took them down? Anyway, I like them all and still enjoy reliving some of those times. And the covers!

Love it when someone logs into a thread that annoys them to let all the posters to that thread know that they are annoyed by the thread. Counter-intuitive, isn't it?

As for me, I say keep the pretty girl covers coming! This thread brings back lots of fond memories.

RCM was a good mag, but I haven't seen it in ages, since the late 1980s. I too will miss them b/c they covered a wide spectrum of rc stuff. But then RC car action and Horizon hobby made sure to bury them.

I think that's what happened - The big wigs.

Spaceworm, I dont' think they're inflatable. I think that they're solid, virgin material.

On another note, I was on another thread and the subject of the "Flight of the Liberty Bell" came up. For those of you too young to remember, in late 1975, Bob and Doris Rich flew a Goldberg Senior Falcon across the country from Kitty Hawk to California to celebrate the upcoming Bicentennial.

Wouldntchaknow, I had that issue (Feb 1976) in my archives. I'm going to paste it in here and invite those other chaps to come over and view it. I thought that you other RCM Faithful would also appreciate it. It might take a few uploads to get it all up here.

Thanks for the Kudos, guys. That was very interesting. I wish the article would have included more of their travels through the southwest, between Texas and CA. Still, it covered 10 pages as it was.

I think that I might have some other articles out here, like Chuck Cunningham's 3-part job on float design, etc.

Thanks Bob, I do remember that article. I think that was a fun deal! The coolest part is that General Doolittle attended a ceremony about the flight (looking at the pics). We forget that it is all about fun, and adventure!

Yup, Riddle... sometimes folks take it too seriously. I was glad to see General Doolittle grace the ceremony - that was quite an achievement. It was really nice of him to add some dignity and importance to it.

I think that article means even more to us now, than it did then!
