    RE: Has RCM folded?

Thanks,.. but I also miss the good discussions that we used to have on here...

I wonder if there would be any value to purchasing the assets of the magazine (articles, columns, artwork, etc.,) and re-start the magazine using the more timely articles for print - by that I mean to reprint the articles that would still be relavant today such as teaching aerodynamics and aerobatics, teaching how to design, etc. Then maybe that would attract current day info as well.

    And of course, the covers!!

Kinda like what United Syndicate did with Peanuts? Just re-issue past articles in new covers?

Yup, that's just the idea.... re-publish the content that is relavant to today and perhaps a few 'history lessons' such as the article where they crossed the USA by RC Airplane in 1976 for the Bicentennial or when 0an RC airplane flew the Atlantic unassisted. That's the idea...

    RE: Has RCM folded?

I forgot the reason why RCM magazine went out of business.............but is it because the competition killed it or is it because the owner(s) simply wanted out of the business. I don't go to the newsstands anymore since about 15 years ago to peruse/look/buy the magazines of radio control airplanes so I have no idea for the reason of the demise of RCM. 'Nuff said.

    RE: Has RCM folded?

Man I have about 5 Rubbermaid bins full of RCM under a friend's house in Kaneohe, HI. I lived there from 99 to 05, but left them when I was told I would be overweight on household goods for my next move to the mainland. Now I wish I brought them and paid for them. I tried to collect as many old ones to add to my subscription, which I eventually let die. Going back for vacation next month and am going to see if there is some book rate to send them, slow boat and least cost. I'll see if they are all moldy first. Jon

    RE: Has RCM folded?

It would be great to get them all on DVD's. It would save a lot of storage and moving issues.

It could be done. Get enough people to copy 6 magazines each. Their reward could be a free set of DVD's

I did an experiment and found I could copy a magazine in about 1hr

    Who is the current owner?

The copyrights are probably still in effect , at least for a lot of them. I'm far from an expert but I see a great way of getting sued here unless proper permissions are obtained.

That's why my last comment was "who is the owner?".
My idea is to do it in conjunction with the owner with him/her being able to sell copies.

Should be printed inside the magazine. Check the most recent issues you can find. Also, someone at the plans service may know.

Well, I'm clearing up my magazines, have a lot of dupes that I might pass around to the local club guys. I think that it will take me all day to sort things out but it's raining so I won't be wasting a flying day.

In any event, here's something that was in the drop zone the last time that I went skydiving.

    Hello everyone,

I was working on my surplus/doubles of my RCM's (I have a box full - anyone want them, for the postage??). I've come across several that I've bought but haven't had a chance to read yet.

Here's something to warm all you folks living in our Northern climes on a cold December day.

    RE: Has RCM folded?

IIRC, founder and publisher Don Dewey died and his heirs had no interest in running an RC magazine. There was an attempt to find a buyer, but nothing came of it. The closure took the advertisers by surprise, never mind the readers.

Abelard, what or who is IIRC? Not familiar with that acronym....

As for the comment about the heirs not having an interest in running the magazine, I can't buy that. Guys like Pearson, et al had been with them for years. I feel that they would have had a vested interest in keeping the magazine running.

I'd like to get more information about the factors that forced the closure. There's more to that than lack of interest. Perhaps you could give us the source of your information...

If it was the heirs, I must say, what a bunch of freakin' losers!!!!!! I could never figure out why RCM disappeared as it was hands down the coolest and edgiest mag of its time. If someone could bring it back with the same vibe, it would be a hit! Just my humble opinion, old school baby ;-)

    Cheers,

    RE: Has RCM folded?

No problem, Bob, glad to help.

Yes, I'm kind of curious what led to RCM's downfall, because they were an excellent magazine, out of all of them, enjoyed them the most. Their plans service appears to still be open. In the past I have ordered a number of RCM plans, they are excellent.

I'm thinking it has been the change to the way of doing business. More and more stuff is being done on line. It seems some other magazines are starting to struggle. Traditional mall type bookstores (Waldon's Books, etc.) are closing in droves.

Perhaps they should have come up with a Kindle type download subscription service?

    RE: Has RCM folded?

    Hi GG,

When I reach for an old issue of RCM, I can see that it was a different 'magazine' from later years. Some past issues were over 300 pages long! I wonder if it was a combination of the pressure from Advertisers as well as the shift to ARF's that forced them to change their editorial direction, i.e., publishing more palatable product reviews, etc. and less construction and design.

Also, there was a shift away from scratch building and kits as ARF's became more available in the market place. RCM was a magazine that focused on the nuts and bolts of model aerodynamics and construction, which many modelers have gotten away from recently. I think that folks who were entering the hobby at that time found less and less to read about, which was a shame. There was a lot of information in there to help people grow within the hobby.

I'd still like to see someone resurrect the magazine and re-print the relavent articles as well as printing articles about new technology, just to give folks something to make them grow in the hobby. Perhaps even collaborate with some of the editorial content of the 'old' (i.e., Gordon Banks era) RC Report issues.
