Default Need help clearing out a virus/spyware

I have picked up a virus/spyware that redirects my hompage login, and I think has a tracking bug with it. (No I did not get it here)

I have done repeated Adware and Webroot spy sweeper cleans, but it keeps showing back up. I have also uninstalled explorer and re-installed a few times, but it keeps showing back up.

I am guessing it is buried somewhere in the Windows files, but is not showing up on the cleaning scans (at least the root cause isn't).

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds to me like your home page has been hijacked. Probably says about blank and then redirects you. It's difficult to get out of the registry, but I have had excellent results with this product from Microsoft. It's there version of spyware removal. When you're finished, turn off system restore to dump the spyware from your restore files. Then reboot and turn it back on if it doesn't do so automatically. Spybot makes a good attempt at getting rid of the 'about-blank' trojan hose.

There are a few websites that can tell you how to get rid of specific viruses and trojan horses. Put the name in 'Google' and you should see various sites amd blogs that discuss how to delete them.

AVG is also pretty good.

(Adaware, Spybot and AVG are all downloadable)

Use the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program for starters. That program has a function that allows you to reset the browser, and allows you to block any future hijack attempts. I am a computer tech who deals with this stuff on a daily basis. Please feel free to PM me if you have any more questions, as I'm sure this thread will be closed down soon.

No, I am not running XP, I have 2000 professional.

I tried the windows antivirus, and did the homepage hijack reset. It worked the first time I opened my browser, but the second time, the "about blank" popped back up. Funny, though, the settings in the windows antivirus are unchanged.

I already have adware running, maybe I will try Spybot.

Try Pc cillin internet security software from Trend Micro. It's one of the best out there. It's a firewall, anti virus and spy ware remover. It costs money but so does anything that's good. I had that auto blank issue too but I don't remember what finally got rid of it. It might have been going to the Pc cillin software. No more of those problems since going to this software. So some research on good anti virus software and get it.

The 'about-blank' that comes up is in the registry. If you put 'about-blank' in Google you will find many people showing how to remove it. You have to use Regedit.exe (standard in recent Windows) but it's quite easy, as long as you follow the directions exactly. Be careful though!

Go get a free program called "Hijack This" works every time on getting rid of these problems.

Hopefully some of the suggestions offered will help, but Deadeye is correct. I need to close this thread since it is not RC related.
