Sunray Bipe

I am not familiar with the requirements for 3D flying, but the ads talk about large control surfaces. The Sunray was designed to fly fast and turn left. It does that very well. Control surfaces are small to keep down the flutter. Ailerons on top wing only.

I don't believe it was ever kitted. It appeared in RCM in March 1975. Plans are available, or they were anyway in Jan of 2006. I believe RCM plans has a website. If not their address:
RCM publications
144 west Sierra Madre Blvd.

Specs: Wing area 700sq in
Upper wing 51" Lower wing 38"
Wing Chord Upper 9" Lower 6 3/4"
Fuse 50 1/2"
weight 7 1/2 pounds

Default RE: Lets see your Biplane!!!

Just noticed this page even though it has been here for several years.

The reason I'm posting here comes from the fact that I rescued a very grungy Byron Staggerwing from a hobby shop about two years ago in hope that a friend of mine, an admitted Staggerwing nut, might want it. Unfortunately he had just sold his house and relocated to the Canadian border. Although he would have bought it otherwise, I found myself stuck with it. A year and a half later and after coming within an eighth of an inch of throwing it in the dumpster, I finished it and immediately put it up in the same hobby shop with a for sale sign on it. It had a Quadra 32 and was restored to flying condition but I never flew it, I was so sick of looking at it I just wanted it gone.

I had succunbed to my usual personality disorder of not being able to know when to quit and had pulled out a lot of stops in restoring it. A very detailed R-985 engine, a complete interior, and a difficult white paint job combined to nearly send me to the home for the terminally bewildered but I managed to last it out. The guy who snapped it up far sooner than I ever thought it would sell will not fly it and is the kind of person who never sells anything so I guess it will be passed down as a family heirloom. He still has the same Porsche 356 coupe he bought back in the late fifties after all. He has informed me that the Staggerwing model occupies a place of honor in his home, being permanently on display atop his grand piano.

Here it is, all 23 lbs. and 73" span of it.

For those familiar with the Byron retract system for the Staggerwing and the fact that it occupies space in to cockpit when retracted, the front seats tilt back as the gear comes up. Hey, you aren't examining the detail in the cockpit when it's flying are you?

That is a scale copy of a 1947 issue of "Life" in the starboard map pocket. The pilot's side map pocket has...what else? Maps, of course. (They are battle maps of Korea but who can tell at this scale.)

The HS-38 headset was a model in itself as was the vintage potato masher mike. There is a different 1947 "Life" issue on the back seat.

Bottom was full of holes from all the stuff put there. I filled the holes and relocated the service items. All switches and service points are now in the baggage compartment. Latches are magnetic and work well.

Fortunately the Williams Brothers cylinders are correct for the Pratt & Whitney R-985 or I would have had to make the correct ones. I am presently researching the Wright "Cyclone" for my 1/6th scale Curtiss "Goshawk" and I am extremely thankful for the Williams items on this model as a result. Ever try to faithfully duplicate a cylider for an aircooled engine in a smaller scale?

I have a question about my bipe... its a Lanier Ultimate with a Saito 180 on it, and I'm currently running a 16x8 Bolly prop. The plane weighs about 11 pounds.

Whenever I give it full throttle, it starts to roll, like an aileron roll, to the left.

This plane has a 5 foot wingspan, and I would think, especially with two wings, that there wouldn't be enough engine torque to twist the plane. I've checked the incidence, and all seems pretty close (as close as you can measure with one of those cheezy Hangar 9 meters).

Any ideas what could cause this? If I stay at 3/4 throttle or less, it seems to fly well, but the closer I get to full throttle, the worse it gets.

16x8 seems a bit small for a 1.80 saito!!
I run 14x10 - 15x8 - 16x6 on my FS-1.20 4stroke. I believe the 1.20 can also use the 16x8 for scale flight.

Perhaps it is revving really high with the 16x6 on your 1.80???

Murph......

P.S. my 1.20 is on a 57" Super Skybolt that weighs over 10 lbs.
I think your bipe is torque rolling due to the truly massive power involved!!

Here are a couple pics of my recently completed Sig Smith Miniplane. Saito 62, onboard glow (not really necessary, but good for the Cool Factor ), no muffler just a flex pipe header with pressure tap- beautiful sound at 1/3 throttle. This bipe took 6 months to build, worth every minute and flies like a dream.[8D]

Anybody know of a good bipe kit for a Saito 30??

Anyway I was flying my GP Ultimate .40 inverted this past weekend and tangled it up with another plane I have 5 nice slice marks on the top wing from the other planes prop, and I sliced a corner of his wing tip with mine, both planes landed just fine but thought you might like to see the pics.

Hey Has anyone tried flying the GP Ultimate .40 as a mono-wing I have flown other bipes in the past with just the lower wing with no problems, but i was thinking of giving this one a try, as We are flying tomorrow and I haven't had the time to make the quick repair on the top wing or get the Strut fixed yet. I'm probably going to go for it anyway just was wondering if any of you experienced it yet with this bird... I'll be taking a video for sure anyway

Thanks

I really probably ought to wait until everything's done, and she's flown...but she just looks too good not to share now.

Hoping to get the maiden done late this month or early next. Build thread is [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4422492/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]here[/link].

gboulton,, I don't blame you, she looks HOT!~!!! Great job and I can't wait myself to hear about the maiden flight.

Well for any curious people wondering if the GP Ultimate Bipe flys with one wing,, SHE DOES

I will post the video right here today sometime, but the winds were in excess of 25 - 30 mph at times making it a difficult decision to even try but I went for it anyway, she took off okay just had to stay pretty level for quite a distance, then once she got past the wind slowing it down it was pretty smooth sailing,, Loops turned into spirials but everything else went fine, EXCEPT landing, she didn't like the slow speed at all, so I faced her into the wind,[>:] brought her in hot [>:][>:]and as soon as it slowed enough to desend []she went ballistic [X(]and started tossing and turning and crashed into the field just what I thought may have happened,, maybe i should have went for the test on a calmer day. but you can see it all on the video later. She can be rebuilt and will be... Here are some Pics of the damage

Thanks! I'll admit to just a tiny bit of pride.

Take a peek at the buld thread...I'm sure the upcoming (hopefully soon) maiden report, pictures, and video will wind up there.
