Default Harbor Freight Shelter at Heli Field

Here is a picture of the shelter that we have assembled at the new heli field.

When people are flying at the heli field PLANES need to avoid flying over the heli pilots. Stay in front of the cone on the left side of the field.
Heli pilots cannot fly too far out either or you will be in the path of landing planes. For this to work, we need to share the airspace and watch out for collisions.

Richard financed the shelter out of his pocket... how about donating $20 to help with the cost?

Default Ceiling Installation.

Gary, John and I (and a few others) have been busy adding a pressed board ceiling to the clubhouse and getting ready for the Veteran's Day flying event. The ceiling is being financed by donations. Please shoot Gary a $20 to help with the improvement. We hope to build a removable interior partition to keep half the shelter warm through the winter. There will be a passage door and a couple of glass panels.

The club paid for new front doors and handles. Don and I gave the new door a couple of thick coats of exterior paint to seal them and keep them nice. Gary installed several new wall panels on the exterior and painted them to match the existing. The shelter is looking goooooood! Come by and pitch in. It is always good when the club facility improves.

Just a quick note from Todd Landen,

Retired on Veteran's Day. Now how many people can say that. I'll still be on terminal leave til Feb 20th but for all practical purposes I am retired from 21 years Active Army, Infantry with 3 combat tours on 11 Nov. Been an honor.

Default Planes for sale

I have a couple of 80-100cc size planes that are my Dads - he's tired of looking at them sitting in his shop. If anyone has an interest, let me know. I'm sure we can settle on a good price. I happen to have a nice ZDZ100 that would work in either plane if you would need it - either would make a good first giant scale aerobatic plane and you'd get in the air very economically. Neither plane has been set up for 3D but are really nice flying planes for aerobatics.

Airframes and wheels only- no engine, radio, spinner, propeller, tank, etc.

White/green plane is a Great Planes Extra 300 - 103" span, 88" long
Red plane is an Aerodynamics Raven - 100" span, 88" long

Not an RC model, but definitely a work of art.

On top of the newsletter it states that the rules are open for discussion. It seems to me like these are the old rules and they are asking for commentary from club members. I do not believe these are new rules, it's just that they weren't published before.

"As of January 2014, the Free State Aeromodelers Flying Rules are open for public comment and are under review. Please submit any comments, requests for change, or
otherwise to [email protected]. Please title the email subject line, “Flying Rules 2014”.
Rules will also be open for comment during our February and March 2014 club meetings."

@purcilas, on_your_six
Regarding the February 2014 InFlight newsletter, the published rules are the current rules posted to the FSA website (http://www.flyfreestate.com/about-us/field-rules). Since the rules have not been reviewed by the members for quite some time, the officers felt it was time to open them up for comments or suggested changes. We want to gather as much feedback from the members before we finalize a new set of rules moving forward for the 2014 flying season. All the rules are up for discussion, henceforth the period of open comments. let me know if you have any questions OR feel free to bring your comments or concerns up at our February and March 2014 club meetings. Cheers!

@on_your_six
In regards to the rules from the old FSA website, I will investigate to see if I can find them. Unfortunately, shortly after we had pushed our new site live, I became unable to connect to the server and Marty (if that is his name) became increasingly hard to contact. So long and short, I need to find out if a back-up of the site exists. I apologize for that oversight and I will keep you abreast of the situation.

Please keep in mind is that these rules were reviewed by the club officers prior to the new site being release. Lastly, the rules are up for review and comment specifically for the reasons you state. If you feel they need to be changed in any way, please let the officers know via email or at the club meetings.

My apologies if these are / were not the rules you are familiar with. This is exactly why we opened the flying rules up for membership review - to get a unified voice / view.

FSA Feb. 14, 2014 Club Meeting Postponed

Unfortunately, with another round of snow forecasted for the region this evening, everyone digging out from what just happened, and the Aquatic Center unsure if they will be open this evening, the Free State Aeromodelers February club meeting is postponed until further notice.

We will notify everyone of a new meeting date as scheduling arrangements with the Aquatic Center become finalized.

Thank you and stay safe!

I want to remind everyone... we have a great speaker for friday night's meeting; Major John Camino will be telling you about flying jet intercept in the National Capital Region. They fly more air intercepts than anyone else in the service. It should be a great talk.

All,
Haven't seen anybody's thoughts on the current rules- please share. Here's what I sent in- I invite your comments.

I assume that any changes to field rules would require a vote and would need to be approved by the general membership.

Dave

Message submitted to [email protected]:

- Biggest area of focus for me are the sound rules so I'll start here. Overall I don't think we have ever had any sound issues in the (how many years - like 15?) time we have been in our current location since it's very industrial/non-residential. Even when I fly my larger gasoline powered planes I can hear the road noise off of Rt 95 so we aren't even the largest contributors to noise in the area.

As I read section #16 the sound limits are just guidelines- a suggestion, not a requirement - that aren't actually included in the rules at this time since #17 specifically states that they "may be included if a majority vote of active members instates these limits at a monthly club meeting".

The rules do require that engines are "effectively muffled" - by my judgement this has worked for us for a long time and my suggestion is that we continue as is with sound guidelines- i.e., we continue not to have them in the flying rules.

- Preliminary Rules seem to be fine and sensible. The only one I have any comment is about is #1- not a big deal but I don't want to have a marker hanging off of my transmitter- I solved that by wrapping it neatly around my antenna.

General Field Rules

#1 and #2 - Fine

#3. Generally, having spectators in the pits is not problematic when the field isn't busy - interested persons / prospective members are invited over to look more closely and that works fine as long as there aren't engines running or starting at the time. I would suggest, however, that we need to do a better job of being more vigilant in our enforcement during events with real "off the street" spectators- Family/friends of flyers in their tent area is not an issue- My suggestion here for all of us to merely do a better job at policing the real off the street spectators and keep them behind the fencing during high activity events.

#4 - #8 - Fine

#9 - Standing in the pilots station. Not a big deal but I personally don't like standing in the box- I find it restricting and distracting if the pavers are uneven under my feet.

#10 - #14 - Fine

#15 - I submit that there are other ways to fly low passes other than touch and goes, approaches and landings. Some like to just fly by without touching- others are able to do maneuvers- rolls, point rolls, etc. I have hovered over the middle of the runway when no one else is flying. I'd like to see this rule changed to allow flying over the middle of the runway if no one else is flying and low passes at or beyond the far side of the runway without restriction to specific maneuvers when others are flying so long as the pilot is capable of performing them safely

#16 - #17 - See first comments

#18 - #19 - Fine

Gary and I finally got together this morning and put together a list of field clean up items;
1.) move left counter out of storage trailer to make room for tractors
2.) move both steel gang boxes out of storage trailer for same reason.
3.) Weld Fort Apache Bracket on to trailer.
4.) Organized and dispose of junk on remaining shelves.
5.) Throw or give away two shelving units.
6.) Install four large pavers at the first hole in the fence
7.) Rake gravel and stones out of grass near driveway on both sides for grass cutting.
8.) Install new wind sock (if it has arrived)
9.) Clean and sweep inside of shelter, remove all trash
10.) Dispose of old Craftsman riding lawnmower.
11.) Dispose of trash under the trailer.
12.) Install new orange material on flight boxes (Tom - need pan head screws and screw guns)
13.) Replace broken PVC pipe on 2nd flight box (Tom - need parts and Glue)
14.) Need to figure out how string trimming is to be accomplished... will one trimmer even work?
15.) Finish cutting grass
16.) Figure out what we are going to do to replace shelter at Heli field.
17.) Mount video cameras.
18.) Paint steel tables powder blue (Tom - need paint/brushes)
19.) Pickup trash along side Van Dusen road... (Tom - need trash bags)
20.) We plan to leave the wood on the building for a couple more weeks.

Any other ideas?
I will make copies for meeting tomorrow night.
