Big Thanks to Gary, Charles, Mark, Tom and Brian Messerschmidt (yes he is related) for all the assistance yesterday. Thanks to the rest of the club for not tar and feathering me today. It was a very successful event, we raised some money, fixed the heli pit, installed electrical outlets and provided a great place to fly for 17 pilots.
Well Done Freestate.... please let me do it again next year.
Enjoy the new outlets..

Gary is standing at the door way of the shelter.. the excavation has been completed for the handicapped drop off point for wheel chairs. With a new club member being wheel chair bound and several of the wounded warriors needing a bit of help maneuvering, this will make things better for them. Gary and I are taking up a collection to fund the addition. It there is a handicapped person present... they should be allowed to park next to the entrance on either side. Thanks for your cooperation.

OK... so a new guy shows up with a 3-axis gyro stabilized plane and can fly and pass the airmanship test... do we force him to fly the test without the 3-axis system turned on?
What about multi-rotor aircraft do we require that the pilot demonstrate the ability to fly the MR without any stabilization turned on?
DCRC added a rule to cover this... they said you had to fly without electronic stabilization. Is that fair??

My first reaction is in order to solo- yes. To me, passing your solo means you can control, take off, fly, and land the plane without electronic stabilization. The 3 axis stabilization is OK for learning - and if you want to keep using it, that's up to you, but to get your solo you have to be able to fly without it.
Multi-rotor... I don't think it's even possible to fly without electronic stabilization so that would have to be treated differently.
What did DCRC do?

DCRC says no 3-axis for flight test.
Maybe we should disable the heading hold gyro on a guy's RC helicopter. I am not sure that I would do well on that test. Should a guy be required to fly a flybared helicopter to prove their skills? Is a FBL controller giving the guy too much help?
Yes you can fly a manual mode on many MRs. I think that hovering is such a basic skill, that a guy should be able to hover. It is too easy to get disoriented fly a MR. Generally, I fly MR with "Intelligent Orientation" active. That is all you need to solve the orientation problem. BUT, should a guy be allowed to do it on a flight test? Not sure about that one.
As time goes on... we may just determine that how you do it is less of a problem than just "that you do it safely". Foamies and electronic components sure have changed the game. As the electronics become better, the argument of a system failure becomes less.
When is a pilot, a pilot?
Should there be more model ratings? 1.) small foamy <50mph, 2.) large electric >50mph, 3.) Glow engine plane, 4.) Gas Engine plane, 5.) Jets, 6.) Electric Helicopters, 7.)Glow and Gas Helicopters, 8.) EDF electric planes
Then the problem would be how do you enforce it?

Rather then police what they fly perhaps the enforcement comes in the form of how they comply with the safety regulations of the field. If you don't fly safe and respectfully, you don't fly at all. But before you can police, you must educate. Unfortunately FSA has lapsed in this department and the slack should probably be corrected. How? I'm not sure but, from a first person point of view ever since I became a member 2+ years ago I was never properly introduced to "FSA Safety". And I've never heard anyone talk about it as a club measure. Food 4 thought. -aw

You of all people know better than that. You posted the club's rules on the glass at the field. Did you not take the time to read them? As the safety officer, don't you ever see me talking to someone about an infraction. I have to see it to say something. I have even requested letters be issued to offending parties.
Having one grand penalty "being kicked out of the club" is not really a penalty system, but that with letters is all I have. Generally everyone is conscious of the "rules" and every new guy that I meet is directed to the posted rules.
If you can't follow the rules you posted, what more is expected... You want me to yell at you on the flight line... Not Going to Happen. Maybe we need committee meetings!
By posting the issue on electronic 3 axis systems, that was a safety issue I brought up for discussion... lots of varying points of view.

In my opinion, I find the lack of pilot qualification at FSA to be a bit disturbing. In the past you had to either take flight training and solo or demonstrate your ability to fly solo to at least two approved pilots. That seems to have disappeared, I see plenty of new members (within the last 2-3 years) that do dangerous things in the pits, fly all over the place, and generally don't appear to have control of their models. That's not a shot at the training program BTW. It appears that there are people flying who never actually demonstrated their abilities, they just showed up, joined the club and started flying. We used to require a solo stamp to get access to the gate combo.
As a previous instructor who taught for 6 years, I always insisted that my students demonstrate full control of their aircraft before I would think about soloing them. If I was instructing today, I would insist all fixed wing flying would have to be done with stabilization OFF. Unlike helis and MRs, fixed wing planes (99.9% of them) are designed to fly without stabilization. Stabilization is an enhancement rather than a necessity. I have flown helis but cannot speak as an instructor for them, I would look to our experienced members for their advice on stabilization and flying with or without it.

@Bill
I think you misunderstood my message. I am, indeed, very familiar with the safety rules of the club. And if you didn’t know, I was the driving force behind having the rules re-reviewed by the club members and having them updated last year. There are 2 points I was attempting to call out via my last post:
My point is that FSA as a whole, as a culture, should assess how it wants to approach safety. It can’t lie on the shoulders of just you or a few select persons. It needs to be the mantra of the club membership in word and in practice. Just how that is accomplished remains to be detailed out. -aw

- The club itself, not the members, need to do a better job of reinforcing the safety rules. What I mean by that is constantly getting the safety rules in the faces of our membership and creating more awareness of them. As I am the VP, I’m working with the officers to try find a way to make this happen because like you, I agree that safety is paramount for everyone.
- When I joined the club I was never introduced to the field rules. As a matter of fact, the only way I knew there were official rules is by accident when I was pursuing the website. Upon receiving my membership I was not formally introduced to nor educated on the rules. To this day I do frequently run across persons who really don’t know or understand the safety rules of the club. And it's clear that many do not practice them either. And that's an issue (as you've pointed out).
My point is that FSA as a whole, as a culture, should assess how it wants to approach safety. It can’t lie on the shoulders of just you or a few select persons. It needs to be the mantra of the club membership in word and in practice. Just how that is accomplished remains to be detailed out. -aw

Jet and Gary demonstrate the use of the new sidewalk.
Club members are expected to not drive or park on the sidewalk. If a wheel chair member is present... please let them park next to the sidewalk.
During events, we often post the entire length of the building as handicapped parking.
If you were planning to donate to this project... please give Gary the money towards the winter fuel bill. Everyone appreciates a warm place to come and fly.
