Default Warning, false "Pay Pal" log in page

The "Pay Pal" log in web page below appears to be an attempt to steal your CC numbers
Any e-mail address and password can be used for log in.
Watch out for e-mails asking for "updates" of your Pay Pal account information

http://paypal-webcmd.com/

I found this info on a swedish R/C modelling home page and thought it would be appropriate to post it here

Good information, but nothing new. This happens with Paypal, eBay, Banks, credit cards, etc. If you get an email that looks like it's from any financial institution, do not use the link in the email. Instead, type the URL, or use a bookmark that you know is correct.

I have never used PayPal, but I am curious, anyway. The web site given appears to be legitimate, so what gives it away as a "scam"?
Thanks.

The problem is that nothing gives it away as a scam except for the fact that no financial institution is going to email you asking for additional information. I get these emails from banks that I don't even do business with. These web sites look official but they are just trying to steal bank or credit card information so they can rip you off.

Another reason that you shouldn't click on a link in a suspicious email message is that the way html works, the text of the link may display "www.paypal.com" but the actual link may direct your browser to www.stealyourcredit.com (or whatever).

Like this:[link=http://www.cnn.com]www.paypal.com[/link]

Don't worry, the link is only to the CNN homepage.

If it is a legitimate e-mail, you will be addressed by your name. The scammers just "shotgun" these out hoping someone will bite. I get them with the name of banks I have never even dealt with, wanting me to verify my account, or something.

Even if it's your real name you are still not 100% safe. I get lots of junk mail with my name, but that's not from a place I've ever done business with.

This type of e-mail scam has been around quite a while. It has been covered time and time again by national and local news programs, newspaper, magazines, the BBB and other consumer groups. On top of that, Banks, Credit Card companies, online brokerages, online auction, online payment services, etc have said time and time again (or words to this effect)...

"... WE NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER SOLILCIT SENSITIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION VIA E-MAIL ....".

How can anyone with a computer and an internet and/or e-mail connection or a TV to watch the news or a newspaper to read not know this?????

Dan

Don't ask me, but every couple months another person announces to the world that they have discovered this "new" scam.

Thanks.
I did a quick "login" myself. I gave it a totally redundant name and an even worse password. The name typed in OK, the password showed the "dots" as usual but all of a sudden, I was in, but it was asking me to CONFIRM my name, address, credit cards, etc.

WRONG!

Don't walk away ! RUN!

marwen

good tip!

Easy! Not everyone reads, watches or even pays attention to the news. Many are first time computer users, a little dense, and just don't get it! "It said it was paypal, why should I not believe it. I don't understand." I have meet lots of people like that, after they have been hit.
