Inheritted RC Plane...HELP.....Cowel?
I inherited an Radio Controlled plane and do not want to fly it but rather display it in my 4-year-olds bedroom to inspire him, but it's missing the front nose piece or cowel. When I brought it into a Houston area hobby shop that sells very expensive RC planes, boats etc they said that I needed a 6"inch round .40 cowel that I could buy online in a clear or white fiber glass or plastic that I could paint with model paint to match the plane and complete it. HOWEVER, no online service that I've contacted sells these by size rather by the name of the RC plane and the shop I took it to couldn't identify it. I've tried to attach several pictures that I took of it in hopes that some specialist in this area can help me identify it or even tell me where I can get such a part to complete it so I can finally take it out of the attic and hang it in my sons bedroom. ANY HELP would be grately appreicated...as I don't know anything about these.
Thanks in advance for reading this and helping me.....a TEXAS stay at home mom! - Heidi

RE: Inheritted RC Plane...HELP.....Cowel?
Hi Heidi
I'm no expert but it looks like a Sukhoi Su-26 and if you are told it is .40 size then I guess it's around 55 inches wingtip to wingtip. If so, the cowl from the Black Horse or Kyosho versions would probably fit. Hope this helps - anyone else any ideas?
cheers

Spad / Heidi-
My thoughts were the Kyosho model, but I am with you that either cowl should work. http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_gu...cfm?kit_id=347
Here is a website where you can order a replacement for the Kyosho version. It is in England, but they ship to the US. The part number is: K.11922-01 Cowling - SUKHOI SU-31 BREITLING The list is lenghty and a little hard to figure out the order but the parts are there. Here is the link: http://www.goldstarstockists.net/tam...tpx/kyosho.htm

Good morning Heidi; I'm not sure, but it looks like a version of a Sukhoi, one of the pre-built models. I'll see if I can spot it in one of the many ads. Lee Robinson W. Palm Beach, FL

Certainly looks like a Kyosho to me.
SUKHOI Su-31 40
No.11922
http://www.kyosho.co.jp/web/products...su31_40-e.html
Since it appears that Tower no longer carries Kyosho, I would try contacting Kyosho America with your request.

I just did the math on the conversion for the Kyosho part listed in England... $65.50 and that is probably before shipping! I wonder what Kyosho America wants for it?

RE: Inheritted RC Plane...HELP.....Cowel?
The cowel noted on Hobby Tower's website for $15.00 looks great BUT the width is 6 5/8" and the diameter of the nose of my plane is 6" will this be too large or should I just get and and feel lucky I found something close and try to fit it using a rubber gasket or something? I contacted Kyosho America directly and they said they identified it as their old plane a SU-31 .40.....and said they don't make the .40 cowel for this anymore. Is this why the measurement above seems off? Just want to spend my money well. If anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it. Thanks Heidi

Hi Heidi,
You might check with Stan's fiber tech, he's listing a Kyosho Sukhoi cowl for 37.95, this will be a unpainted and unprimed fiberglass cowl which is probably much better than the original ABS plastic piece.

I'd guess that the hobby shop made a rough measurement and you might want to measure it yourself. Many of these planes from differant companies are actually the same model. If it is indeed 6" wide when you place the 6-5/8" cowl centered on the nose it will only be 5/16" larger on each side. To not have to paint it and for display only I'd say it is a fine match.

I think you're absolutely right.... but feel better having got your second opinion before ordering as I'm such a novice. Thanks again for showing such kindness to a stranger and helping me out! May the blessing be returned ten fold! Sincerely, Heidi
