I got to do the same thing a couple of years ago and had the same feelings that you did. Took very big Cajones to go up in one of those with a sky filled with flak and fighters coming from every direction.

B-17 ride
I've been lucky enough to hitch a ride in two B-17's. First was the Nine-O'nine the second was the Aluminum Overcast. The view from the nose is awesome at 700'. I had the chance to ride in the Nine-O'nine or a B24. Kinda wish I had chosen the B-24. I didn't know I would get another B-17 chance 6 months later.

I got to ride in a B-17 as well. It was a set up where you bought a place on a flight so that the group could raise money for more restorations.
Oh what a feeling that flight was. Best experience I've ever had in a plane. I even got to look through the bomb sight at one point. What a neet thing to do. Better yet, we were flying over the city I lived in and was able to spot my pesky neighbor's house! Oh but for a load of 500lb GP bombs.....
Clear skies all..
