That's kind of typical. Especially for 4 strokes.

Default Stupid Question

THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS!!! Give this guy a break. He obviously dosen't have much experience with model engines. And besides, he's a car guy.

NOS2006,
Nitro blast was just making a small joke. don't get wound so tight that you can't laugh at it. I thought it was funny, and not the list bit "getting smart".

part of this hobby is being able to laugh (even at yourself if you are the target of a joke). When I was learning to fly (6 years ago) I managed to wrap my trainer around our windsock pole, and to this day I still here jokes about it. I just laugh right along with them because it was really pretty funny, even though it happened to me!!!!

lighten up and enjoy life

I still hear about my GP F-15 putting a baseball size hole in the roof of a metal warehouse . Especially when it comes time for the Smokin' Hole award. Even though it happened years ago, they still think I deserve it .

serious answer:

exhast manifolds and mufflers get hot by nature. the only thing that can be done is to make sure it is not too close to anything heat sensative and is in position to get some airflow over it to cool it. if it is gettting so hot that it is discoloring then your engine may be running lean (even if the head temp is lower, which might lead to beleive of more troubles)

if in doubt run it rich, you may lose a small bit of power but your engine will run alot longer. (even on my high performance and 3d planes I run my engines about a 1/4-1/2 turn rich off "peak", so far even with many gallons through them I have yet to see any drop in performance due to wear.

not so serious answer:
if its hot enough to fry an egg, ask yourself, scrambled or sunny side up.

if you are a true newbie to RC cars and nitro power in general read up in the car forum and ask questions, you may get a smart @$$ answer every now and then but you will be better off then for not asking.

Default Serious...

OK you first said your engine was smoking. If your engine has smoke coming from the outside, it is too hot, and that's because it is too lean. If your muffler is smoking on the outside it's because your engine is too lean and getting too hot, and it might be leaking fuel from the head gasket from running too lean..the head bolts get loose when the engine runs too hot from being too lean..

Starting to see a pattern?? Too lean.

And seriously..there is a car section where folks who run cars might be able to better answer your questions than here in the Clubhouse.

I bet they tell you you are running too lean.

PS unless the smoke is coming from the end of your muffler, then that is a good thing. When the muffler stops smoking (from the end) that's when your engine starts smoking...

The gases inside the engine are much hotter than the engine around it, thats why it has oil in the fuel, the muff on the other hand is thin walled and gets much hotter, if you dont cut your body back enough you will melt it.
the only smoke you need to worry about in a IC car comes from around the engine head or from the clutch, everything else is normal, and they make alot of smoke... oil to poor high reving engine is good

Now... can we add this thread to top ten questions asked
lol, don't touch it, i can imagine him running after the car the check if its cooled off in the airflow Dosnt even work at 200mph

crazy? yes, have a sense of humor, definatly
seriously.. how hot did you expect it to be? and how do you define hot. The internal engine temp is way over 100 degrees, probably hotter on a fast reving Buggy engine. this just passes right onto the muff to cool before exiting ( cooling is what muffles the sound in a way ) which is why you can put your finger behind the exit and feel for oil ( a check you might wanna try )
a lean engine will smoke right from the case as it cooks like chuck says, we tried it on a OS 10, didn't blow it up tho !:O!
Blue smoke from the muff exit is perfect
