My First Flight Of 2003!
The weather cleared, a bit. The rain stopped and the winds subsided a little - still steady at 22 MPH but only gusting into the mid 30's. Great
I decided to take a quick flight off the slope in front of my house. the landing area is *very* tight, so I flew my old beater DAW TG-3 foamie. Ballast was a necessity, as the poor thing is too light and draggy to fly in that much wind in its stock condition.
Tossed it out. Once I got through the layer of turbulence near the hill the air smoothed out, and the TG-3 commenced to climb like the proverbial homesick angel. What fun! Loops, hammerheads, (ugly) rolls, all the usual stuff. Whee!
I brought it in about 45 minutes after launch, as the gray clouds were threatening again. The wind was howling and blowing straight at the hillside, which made a standard approach impossible, as the plane was always in lift. After a couple of unsuccessful approaches, I picked out a fluffy bush, lined up the plane and dove for Home. Scrunch! No damage.
The plane is resting comfortably in the basement, and I'm having trouble seeing around this ear-to-ear grin I'm wearing...

We had a good turnout for a chili / chilly fly. About doz. and a half guys showed up with a plane and flew.
Mid 20's (Fahrenheit) winds stayed low until I had my son up on buddy cord with a Senorita. A stiff crosswind made a couple attempts a landing pretty tense.
I'll stay indoors until it warms way up again.
