How to thread 1/8" K&S Wire ??
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but any help would be appreciated..
I want to thread 4 ends of 1/8" K&S wire with about 3/4" of threads. I have a 5-40 die witch will fit the .125" wire correctly. My question is if it is required to heat the wire first with a propane torch to remocve the temper from the wire or will the hardened wire take the threading ok. ..???...
Thanks,
Bill

I wouldn't try it. Find an already threaded wire size that fits your application close enough. As posted, it's really rough on the die, and the threads may not form properly. It's also hard to get the wire hot enough to soften using only a propane torch. This is "music wire" and way up on the Rockwell scale.

Hi Dr1,
Thank you for you sugestion... It's a little late since I have the wire and structure already fabricated.. I'm going to take a look at a site I once found that explained the different colors of the wire when heated ( with a propane torch I believe) that results in softer wire.
I was just be lazy and hoped I could get away without heating it first..
Hi Dsegal,
Thanks for the info.. I have more reading to do..
