Why is it that Balsa wood at a LHS is such a Rip off?

Example,,, One 1/16x4x48 balsa sheet was over 3 bucks!!! The same sheet at a balsa wood shop is about a buck.

It's where the shop makes the money, after market products. They keep the write up on kits and such as low as possible and get you when you buy the accessories.

It's no different from getting hardware there. Shop carefully.

Lonestarbalsa.com is in Texas, I went there last February, Spent a hundred bucks and got a ton of wood, at least a hundred 6" sheets of varying thickness, and an assortment of spruce stock. I have a splitter, so with the sheets I can make all the sticks I need. I have built 3 planes, rebuilt 4, have not had to buy more wood since, and will not for another few months.... Its great!
