Default Paper airplanes in Space

I asked this one once a while ago [old RConline], and got some great reviews. here it is again...

If there was a huge room; say a gymnasium, attached to the space station (weightless, floating in orbit..) and you made a paper airplane:

when launched, what would the flight path be?
What design would you use?

think about it...

Default paper airplane

Being weightless and no drag, no gravity...
I would say the airplane would fly until it hits something.
You could not plug in control surfaces to make a continous turn...so it would go straight from the point of release.
Sounds fun.now the big question ...How are we going to transport that gym??????

Weightless... yes. Drag free? Not in this universe. It will be flying in the air inside the 0-G environment.

If it were in free space... Then drag may be neligible

Depending on the airplane's trim... it would do a constant radius arc, or a straight line, until it hit an obstacle, (wall, ceiling, floor... person who tossed it.) or until the drag overcame the momentum. Which design really won't matter. The aerodynamics would still function... just no gravity to lift against.. so reduced drag to maintain a straight path.

Default drag etc.

Well I don't know what planet you are from.....but why do you control the position of the shuttle on orbit with pluse jets??
Why not just put a rudder on that big sucker and use it???????????????????????????.
Control surfaces do not respond in a vacuum!

How far do you think an M&M would go in space if you "flicked" it into infinity???
Would a M&M have control surfaces....????????

DOC, you are thinking of what would happen if the gym sized room didnt have oxygen in it, and fhhuber is thinking of it as another air filled module of the space station.

Without an atmosphere to consider... we might as well use a rock as a paper airplane.

You're the one who started... And I think I deserve an apology. Rather than a thinly veiled threat.

True, i didn't mention if there was an atmosphere or not.
Half the fun, right? :P

As for building a gym in space... I'm sure it only a matter of time!

Default plane

Assuming that the gymnasium would have an atmosphere similar to the space station, micro-G, and orbiting the earth, I would build the paper airplane from a single sheet of paper. No folding, creasing, warping, etc...(use of any other design would be unnecessary and wasted time.) To launch my paper airplane (single sheet), I would position it in the center of the gym and simply let go. The airplane would stay relative to the gym and as long as the gym was orbiting the earth, the paper airplane would orbit or, fly indefinitely.

When launched, what would the flight path be? = Orbital, elliptical relative to the Earth.
What design would you use? = single sheet of 8X11.5 college ruled notebook paper.
