I've recently been asked to be a spotter for a friend in an up comming pattern competition and I am just wondering what I would have to do. This guy is a VERY experienced world class pilot and I'm sure even if I mess up he'll still do great. So what's the job entail? and what should i expect?

Ask him what he expects. Everyone is different. I had one spotter that was way taller than me. He liked to stand behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. I hated that. Made it hard to fly. My spotter for glider contests watches other planes and signs of thermals and people where they shouldn't be. I would think you will watch the field for thinks he needs to be aware of as well.
