Default COULD RC PLANES BE BANNED? Say it's not possible!

A friend of mine sent me this link. It seems there's some discussion on a newsgroup about this subject. I'm not too concerned about it really, but it's something to think about. If they are seriously thinking about banning model rockets then who knows what could be next. Hopefully the AMA will address this possible threat to our hobby and take the necessary steps to keep it from getting out of hand. Let's hear what you think about this!

Okay, I'll say it's not possible. Cooler heads will prevail in a time when everything comes into question.

You would think it not possible. But the power mongers have passed some ridiculous laws before. I mean, what kind of law allows you to be found not guilty of murder but then allows you to be found responsible in a civil trial? I never understood that one.

I think we are worrying about nothing. R/C like guns, panel trucks, planes, cars, suit cases, backpacks, and duct taped mid-sections are only delivery vehicles. The feds didn't ban rental moving trucks after the first WTC or OKC bombing incidents. It is up to us to make sure that the feds know that the BEST way to police this is to allow those who engage in it daily to do so. I think the AMA is already being proactive in this new era on our behalf.

xp8103,
I agree with you 100%. I thought this was an interesting subject since it made some headlines. I just wanted to hear what people thought.

We could always have a million pilot fly in in Washington on the lawn at the whitehouse, it is ours, and just imagine a million r/c planes all in one place, it would be like you died and woke up in r/c heaven. Lets start planning.

There was a thread on here yesterday. Same topic. Go look at it for more info and chat. I can't see it happening. Too many manufactureres would stop it and if it did, it would put a huge number of people out of work. They wouldn't do that. Ok, so they probably would, but I don't think it will happen. If your worried about it, start stocking a lot of kits now. hehehe.

Default COULD RC PLANES BE BANNED? Say it's not possible!

Hi everyone.
I am from India and this threat has been of concern to the security agencies here.
I know because I have been actively involved in giving demonstrations and training some of the staff at the NSG (National Security Guard) for some time now. Here is more information about the agency:

http://mha.nic.in/nbdc.htm

This training has involved the introduction of this wonderful hobby to these agencies and training some of their staff to fly. It also involves devising counter measures, in case of one of these models is used by any terrorist. Believe me, banning it would not solve anything. It will just take it out of the hands of the hobbyist, but still be available to any anti social element. The technology exists and they already have access to it.
It is a threat, and all of us RC enthusiasts must come to terms with that. It is no good saying....no way, they can't do that.... and expect that nothing is going to happen.
We must see how "we" - as a whole community - can help the security agencies who are trying to help us live a free life. We must realise that the times are not the same as what were..... imagine someone telling you 10 years ago to not lock your bags when you fly coz they have to be checked. Had 9/11 not happened, we would have all been so angry and unaccomodating to this - saying that our freedom is being taken away.

It's my opinion, and experience, that laws only make sense to the majority of people (public and government) voting for them. The number of people involved in R/C modeling would amount to a pathetic minority. If this were to actually come to some kind of house vote, I can not see that the interests of our community would be defended in any way whatsoever.

That is too funny. The only reason Hillery wants to get back into the whitehouse is that they missed some of the furniture that they wanted.

It isn't only the people that fly that will be affected. How many employees are working in the industry that don't fly? A lot! Futaba, OS, Tower, Global, Horizon, all the small hobby shops, and a lot lot lot more that I didn't name. That would put so many people out of work it would not be funny.

Default Think Customs isn't concerned...

For anyone thinking that this is a "joke" or "couldn't" happen I currently have a "large" (10 foot fuse, 18 foot wingspan) B-17 kit shipped from the UK being held for "additional inspection" by Customs....

Granted when finished it could carry a bit of a payload but that would take a concerted, knowledgeable, time consuming effort....none of which are likely from a "hit and run" terrorist standpoint...

Yes, a plane could carry a good payload, but so can a bus, a truck and a lot of other things. They are not going to ban those so how can they ban a model airplane? I am sure they can figure out a way, but lets not give them any ideas. Guess I will keep buying kits and putting them in storage.

If it comes to it, hopefully the AMA will get all the manufacturers together to help hire a few high-power lobbyists to do our bidding in Washington. If selling kits were banned that would be a big blow, but just think if they banned RC flying altogether. Doubtful that any of this will happen, but I have faith that the AMA, manufacturers, and fellow hobbyists will monitor this and prevail!

It takes more than two people to make this happen. Can you provide a link to show a bill designed to ban RC airplanes, sponsored by the above mentioned people?

Even without reading the noted link at the beginning of the thread, I will state without reservation that if our government was to decide that RC aircraft could be a threat to national security, the FAA in VERY short order would eliminate any possibility of legally flying RC aircraft.

Bear in mind that we would be dealing with the superior attitudes of a government entity. They are convinced that they have never been wrong. Also keep in mind that we use the low altitude airspace at the whim of the FAA. ALL U.S. airspace is controlled by the FAA. Also remember that the FAA is overseen by the Dept. of Transportation.

All of this is a good reason to keep current with, and support, AMA policies and information. Like them or not, they are the ONLY organized body representing us in Washington.

well, the true story is that they weren't killed trying to assemble an explosive device, but they were killed after we (israel) put a small charge in the model airplane and when they all took a good look at it... bang ! it exploded in their face.

so... what am I trying to say here ? instead of banning it, use their own weapon against them...
