Web Cams at the field
Does anybody belong to a club that uses a web cam at the flying field?
It would be great log on and get some real time pictures of what's happening at the field. Also I beleive it would be a great deterrent to some of the vandalism we've experienced.
Any input on cost, including initial set up and operation?
Our club doesn't have power or phone. Solutions?

No web cam, but I've always thought the idea of a remote, web viewable WEATHER STATION would be nice. It would be great (or bad, I suppose) to sit in the office and see that the conditions at the field are awesome.
Power would be an issue as would the data connection AND the possibility of theft. All could be surmounted, but I doubt it's worth it.

Considering you said you want the web cam to help stop vandalism i think the web cam would probably be one of the first things to get vandalised.

If your site is as remote as ours, the phone line installation would be your biggest expense.
I checked into webcams for a construction site and they wanted about $100/ea/month with a 6 month minimum.

Hi Guys-
Our club (www.sccmas.org) has two webcams and weather reporting from the field. There's also a dial in voice weather reading for those without internet (408-776-0101).
Links to our cams & weather:
Runway cam: http://www.sccmas.org/field/livecam.shtml
Pit cam: http://www.sccmas.org/field/pitcam.shtml
Weather: http://www.sccmas.org/weather/weather.shtml
The system is a basically a remote computer with two digital video capture cards in it to take snapshots of the field. The weather interfaces through one of the I/O's. The camera on our pit area is about $150-$200 and the runway cam was like $500. The runway cam is mounted on top of a light pole at the field and is auto-humidity, temp, etc inside an enclosure.
The system has been running since last Sept and of course there have been hiccups. Photos are updated every 5-10 min and the weather every 5 min 24/7. Our field location cannot get DSL or a cable modem, or wireless internet, so we are just using an internet dialup account and a dedicated phone line. Would sure love to have streaming video though! Obviously, our field has the immenities like an on-site shack and electricity to make this all run.
I had posted some photos of the setup before. They are in this thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...ight=field+cam
For details on the system (it's MAC based), etc contact our webmaster who set it up. [email protected]
Regards,
Michael Luvaraa

the key words on that one were "field cam" because I don't think I put webcam anywhere in it. Glad that the info helps. I'm not sure how one would make a viable webcam system without power unless they had a solar powered system and a wireless setup, etc.
