Pop-up canopies\shelter?
What are the best pop-up canopies being used at the field? I'm looking to get one but can't make up my mind. Is the aluminum or steel frame better?

Havn't seen any aluminum ones here --we have a steel one & it's ok very hard to pop up w/o help & heavy if must carry it any distance.

I have an Easy-Up in steel. It's getting easier to put up the more we use it, but it generally requires two people, four if they're available. It's a little heavy, but the carry bag has wheels on it for long hauls.
A friend has an aluminum one (unknown brand, but older) and it seems a little flimsy
The extra-cost side curtains are worth the money from the sun protection standpoint.

I have two, a 10x10 and a 12x12 from King Canopy. They work quite well, but are a bit heavy.
What you need will depend on how you use them. I use mine at contests, where if it's blowing 40mph, we're staying and flying, so we need our canopies to handle the wind (with extra stakes and the occasional guide-line) and not collapse or explode (saw a pvc one do that at Nats once. Dramatic). Being able to take the occasional passing T-storm is also required.
We have tarps that we zip-tie to the frame under the top canopy to make shade from the side, or to hold out driving rain.
If you just want one for sunday flying and pack up and run when the winds exceed 15mph or so, then just about anything will work, and lighter is probably better

Bought mine a few years ago on sale for well less than a $100. I use it quite often and honestly, I see little difference between mine and pricier models of the same size.
Do wish however I would have sprung for a larger 12x12 with side wall attachments.

RE: Pop-up canopies\shelter?
I just recently purchased one of these from Sports Authority:

A few other people at the club have them, so I knew what I was getting. Great quality, and easy to set up. (2 people is all it takes). I got mine at the end of summer on sale; I got it for $60 instead of $100.

The new carrying bag is easier to use than the older ones plus side shields are standard with the heavy duty model. I have had my second one for two years. The first one held up for ten and was lost in a torrential rain that collapsed it from water build up in the canopy. Nothing that most people need to worry about.
After watching people struggle with other types at various fly ins over the last 15 years I vote for EZ UP. there are cheaper ones but the old saw about buying cheap and buying twice comes rapidly into play if you use them often and in windy conditions.

I bought one made by Caravan from Costco - FAR superior to any of the 3 EZups I have owned. I can put it up and down solo, comes with 3 sides and roller bag, and Costco stands behind it forever.

RE: Pop-up canopies\shelter?
I bought the 10 x 10 cheap one (Quest) for $60 at Dick's
I figure I'll only use it about five times a year so I didn't spring for the better one. At the home field everyone goes in the shelter between flights to escape the sun.
I just bought it last week and had very little trouble putting it up the first time, by myself in the yard, in 20mph winds.
I figured I'd better get one after mooching other people's shade
