RC at War!
I noticed the other day on the coverage of the Iraq war a U.S. Soldier hand launching what appeared to be a polyhedral small gray electric glider type aircraft. This was used as a form of surveillance and transmitted real time pics back to the operator. I am glad to be a part of a hobby that has contributed to aiding with the security and safety of our troops. I hope this gets more coverage and ultimately promotes our hobby in a positive sense. "See Honey, I told you they're not toys!"

Check out the link. It contains a list (with pics) of our current jet, prop and glider UAV arsenal. I wasn't aware we had so many different models.
The hands-down winner of the "Butt Ugly Airplane" contest has to be the Hunter RQ-5 UAV! Kinda looks like they took a Cessna Skymaster and made it ugly!.

No, I didn't see that one.
A couple/few days ago they displayed one of our shot-down UAV's. It was hard to tell if it was a Predator or a Global Hawk. The funny part was watching the bad guys looking for the pilot!
LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Gliders in Iraq
On the video, it deployed a parachute after it was hit, then floated down. It looked like it was directly overhead of the people shooting it down, so I doubt it was recovered by coalition forces.

Nice link. I'll bookmark that one.
Wow! I wan't one of those pocket-held RC Black Windows.
Looks like you pop it out of your shirt pocket, and pitch it into the air. Has a camera to boot!
Unfortunately, it looks like military only. If it was for sale, and in its present form, it's probably worth a fortune.
Hey Tower......you listening? How about a "Street Version".

From their website:
"Since 1986, AeroVironment has been developing small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for use in military surveillance, law enforcement, and civilian rescue efforts. The award-winning Black Widow, developed with DARPA sponsorship, is a six-inch, electrically powered aircraft with a small camera that flies for 30 minutes at a range up to 1.8 km from the ground station while downlinking live color video.
Another miniature flying vehicle, an ornithopter dubbed Microbat, is in development. In its final form, Microbat is expected to weigh less than 15 grams, including controls and a miniature camera with down-link capability".

I caught about 3 seconds of that story.......from the sound I think it was battery powered, but I'm not sure. I wonder how long of a flight is "military" standard. RC flying can be stressful in a fun sort of way, but while under fire.......I dunno about that.

That poor drone, all it was doing was watching the football match and they shot it down lol
good thing they send back data before it comes home.
The dragon eye is almost laughable, a Twin star would be better, there arnt enough of us involved with these things, most are too big, too slow and far to ugly

Yes, I would love the site of a nice Smaragdz gently cruising across the sky as a spy plane, every now and then, a nice little perfect 4 point roll thrown in. That would be XTC!

Gliders in Iraq
I just saw an Air Force recruiting commercial. A little boy throws a paper airplane, then a glider. Next, a little older, he flies a battery powered plane connected to a wire. (Forgot what their called.) Next he's a little older, flying a radio control plane. Then he's grown up, in the Air Force, flying a Predator Drone.
