If you can dig up a copy of "Piper Cubs" by Peter M. Bowers there's a single shot of a tri gear cub on page 114. It's described in the book as an aftermarket modification to J-3's and PA-11's in which the regular landing gear is simply turned around and the nose gear added.

I used to fly a modified PA-11 at Tucson Municpal Airport (1951,
1952). It had a Continental 108 HP,fuel injected flat opposed
4 cylinder engine. The nose gear was non-steerable,but had bungee cords giving limited movement. You ground steered
using wheel heel brakes and rudder. The 72" Low Pitch prop
gave very good short field performance. A very good mountain
aircraft.

Chris, the Iowa Aviation Museum, located at Greenfield, IA has a tri geared Cub on display. The website is www.flyingmuseum.com
Maybe they could supply you with info on the airplane.

As stated, tri pacer is almost the same. Why would you screw up a good cub and put a nose wheel on it though. There are more problems with a nose wheel than you would ever have learning a tail dragger. I don't understand why people are so afraid of taildraggers. They are so easy to take off and land in any condition.

woah now! We are all entitled to our own opinions, much like yours to build a trike cub. As for me, I think a cub with a trike gear is like a trike bipe...just funny lookin'. My .02.

Tri Cub
Hi Chris, In my own defense I don`t consider my self a Clown, but being funny don`t hurt anybody including your self. I or anyone else with our opinion meant to offend you. Bad attitude.

Geez, I didn't mean any offence either. I see people adding nose wheels because others told them tail wheels are hard to fly.
Do what you like, I figured if you had to ask about a nose wheel or pictures to see how it was done, that you were new and didn't want to fly tail dragger for some reason. Guess I figured wrong.

Trike gear is still best for a new flier, easy ground handling & if set up properly more likely less trouble than a tail dragger. What always got me when learning was after what I thought was a perfect landing I had a big black mark under the nose where the nose gear came back so far & the tire touched. Part of the learning cycle I guess. >>>>>>>>>>big max 1935>>>>>>>>

For those of you that have slung insults and jabs at each other, it stops now. There's no need for it.
I'm going to leave this open. I knew about the Tripacer, but wasn't aware of a tricycle-gear Cub. I'd like to know more about any kits/plans/modifications that might be available.

thanks for the picture FLYBOY.That thing in front with a wheel does look out of place on a classic airplane. If I showed up at the field with a nose wheel Cub I would probably be shunned out of the club.Well I think I will pass on this project. Why change something good. And I did have a Cub.She flew great. But it was the ground handling that scared me away from Cubs.Maybe someday I will try again.

I had a Cub that no body could take off it just went crazy even in tall grass. I make it a tri pacer and it cured all the ground looping problems and I didn't tear it up it was my second plane it made many flights . I latter sold it to a new flyer and he used it as a second plane. It may still be flyable . It would not have made it long as a tail dragger.

I had the misfortune of maintaining a full scale trike cub in 96 and I hated that airplane!! that having been said It would be a cool and unique model. How about a Bipe Cub? I wounder?

I think most of the hacked/butchered cubs that are in Bowers were done in the post war period. Probably before Cubs achieved "classic" status and were just cheap, fun to play with planes begging to be experimented with. By modeling one you're not ruining a good cub, you're documenting a specific period of aviation history!
