Default Fly-In pics

Well, I was joking when I said we'd fly today until we got tired, or everything crashed. I'm not real sure which one happened first. It was not pretty.

First up was a guy who'd driven up last nite, camped at the field. Tore tha landing gear out of his 1/4 scale P-51. Don't have pics of that one, but today, just after takeoff, he lost an engine on his 12 foot-or-so span Twin Beech and dumped it in the weeds south of the runway. That it landed in a big bush probably saved most of it (1st & 2nd pic)

Then we had a BUSA Fokker D-VII nose over and go in at full throttle from about 100 feet, made a pretty good dent (3rd &4th pic). A nice Ziroli Stuka got blown wide of the runway by a wierd gust just before touchdown, tore up one gear leg (5th & 6th pic)

We also had a pair of propjet F-16's go in at opposite ends of the field while both were up at the same time. Unrelated causes, but they crashed within seconds of each other (no pics). There was more but I can't remember them all.

We did have some great, uneventful flights, too. A turbine F-16 wowed the crowd a couple of times, and another D-VII put on a good show, lots of other planes. Hotter than the gates of........., well, you know. Most people were packing up by 1pm. We had around 22 registered pilots and about a hundred spectators, pretty good considering gas prices and the heat.

Its always a shame to see such nice planes go in... The DVII I find especially disturbing as I have one ready to test fly if our field ever dries out....

Looks like a nice day for your flyin though, thanks for pictures !

Did it sound like the guy that lost the Fokker was going to rebuild it? Hopefully there is enough to piece back together...or at least build only half a plane .. I hope it can be salvaged...

Nah, there's not enough left to piece together. Snapped both wings in two, completely crunched the fuse past the cockpit, even the tail pieces were broke. He bought the plane at a swap meet last year, fairly nice looking and it had a G-26 at first, would barely fly. He had a 2.4 Sachs on it today, and he flies it like he stole it anyway (all his planes) But it just quit responding, went straight in. The model flies very nicely, The other guy who had one today has 5 of the BUSA WWI planes and says the D-VII is his favorite. He flies his with a G-38.

Good luck on your Fokker maiden.

Well thats a shame, I was hoping at least the wings would get saved.. I know I definately would have stripped them down and tried to work some magic on them !
