Pilot Rating Standards
Is there a source for rating pilots? I see people designating themselves as intermediate and expert, rarely novice. Does the AMA have a set of standards by which you can establish your category. While training several years ago I was given some general guidelines but never checked to see if the AMA or other sources have developed written standards. I would welcome hearing from those of you who may know.
thanks,
Jerry

RE: Pilot Rating Standards
There are no standards as far as I know. People kind of rate themselves based on experience and their own perceived skill level.
Then it depends on the type of model flown.

Novice:
thinks its easy.
doesn't think they need help
crash regularly
Intermediate:
Know it's not that easy
learned they have a lot to learn
crash occationally
try to help others, but often ignored by the Novice
Advanced:
Still learning and looking for new ways doing things easier
crash usually to something beyond thier control
Fly any type aircraft with ease
Tries to help other but knows when they are being brushed off, then proceeds to watch the carnage
SOme thing like this

That's about it ! Good points. At what stage does" landing consistantly without needing repairs" ,fall under ?

One more Class:
SUPER EXPERT, KING OF THE SKY:
Hogs flight station and frequencies, flies flight after flight, has fleet of airplanes.
No time for any kind of Club work.
No time for speaking to, much less helping, lessers, of which everyone is except maybe one or two worshiping go-fer/s!
Able to demonstrate uncontrolled flight over pit areas.
Able to demonstrate 3D inside safety line.
Has demonstrated unique ability to crash other's airplanes.
Able to forget every AMA and Club Safety Rule.
Able to brown-nose club officials to ignore his attitude.

I like Horrace's addition to B17's list.
B17's list needs a beginner definition to it... I've got nothing. Anybody want to take a crack at it?

RE: Pilot Rating Standards
Hey Mike, Landing ? Is that what that was? For what it was, not bad at all. Maybe, just maybe, kit builts are stronger. Apparently, the extra tri-stock & glue I used must have helped. The plane went in fairly hard, I thought. It tore the landing gear off, shoved the battery forward out of it's compartment about 2" & cracked the horizontal stab on one side. Already got it fixed except covering the tri-stock to reinforce the stab. Man, was I lucky !!! See ya later Ed

Class A: I fly full size airplanes so these little models should be no problem.
Class B: I would like to start with a B-17 with working gun turrets and bomb drop.
Class C: I bought this neat airplane at Wally World, but it just doesn't fly.
Class D: I charged the battery when I got the plane and radio last Christmas.
Class E: What is the best airplane and radio I can get for under $100?

RE: Pilot Rating Standards
From the e-mails I receive I could write a book. The reciprocal to Bob Thornberg's "Do you Speak Model Airplane".
My favorite from multiple sources, "I'm going to put a generator on my electric motor, what do I need to charge my batteries while flying?" A "beginner" in a lot of respects.
But I expect this is what we will see more of in the future as "Self Esteem", and Sex Education courses replace 8th grade science.

RE: Pilot Rating Standards
Yes, today's younger people have missed so much. We should feel guilty a bit. The stuff we would make for Christmas in wood shop, those tense moments in chemistry class, learning about what compressed air would do in physics. No wonder we are talking about pilot rating standards now rather than what you would have to do to trim out a bad stall characteristic or how to correct ground looping.
