Default What's "in" and what's "out"?

We're talking what's cool in R/C. What's the "in" thing and what's on its way "out"? Here's my short list:

IN
electric flight
4-strokes
ARFs
real small airplanes
real big airplanes
turbines
warbirds (still!)

OUT
kit building
ducted fans
pylon racing
Ultimate biplane

SOON TO BE "OUT"?
Extra 300
Park Flyers
Diamond Dust (and the like)

Default Null effect

Well, I have;
Electric-Daimond Dust
Ultimate-with a 4-stroke
ARF- Extra 300
Really small-Park Flyer I built
ARF-Pylon Racer
A turbine- A Ductd Fan
with a couple gaint planes and Warbird as well.

Does that leave me on the "Inside looking Out"
or on the "Outside looking In"?

What is really In for me is the few freinds you make on
the fly line playing with any of these toys.
Its all good!

What is "out" is "in" for me -- it just seems less crowded and more fun. Stupid, stupid me!! And I always meet the nicest people

Sheesh!! You all took this the wrong way! I was rally wondering what everyone thought the next "big thing" would be. Hot Rod magazine does a regular "What's in and what's out" piece. For instance, flame paint jobs were "out" for awhile but now they're "in".

Does anyone remember the Great Planes Super Kaos or the Midwest Hots? These were planes that were seen at every flying field but now they aren't even being produced. And how 'bout the gold case Futaba FGK radios. Where are they all at now?

Won't be too long before something comes along that might get people to park there Extra 300s or Diamond Dusts. It happens every 10 years or so.

Default As slow as I build...

My stuff will probably live thru a couple of Hot And Not cycles! As it is now, I have some in each of the catagories..so looks like I'm all set for what ever the fickle winds of modeling blow in next!

Default New thing

Thought controlled aircraft Would totally rule out dumb thumbs The only downside would be if ya lose control over your head, and make the obligitory OH SH*T!!, what would the plane expel at you? That would be a lil hard to explain to the wife when you get home. Honey what happened, "oh, Tom took a radio hit, crashed and his plane pooped on me" . That would definately reinvent the term "Bomb Drop"

What's in for me is anything "warbird". Then again, I'm not holding anyone in contempt for liking other stuff - that's just what I prefer to build.

Hmm....

Extra 300 is on its way out, what am I supposed to do with my new MW Extra?!

I think Great Planes is betting that the Extra isn't on its way out, their new Patty Wagstaff ARF is due out soon.

Default voices

Seafury, I am not jealous, those voices talk to me too, and I have more of them lolololol What scares me is when they actually start to argue with each other. Actually, I don't really have an In n Out list. I am secure enough in my masculinity to admit that I.....oops, wrong message board (JK). I just participate in whatever intrests me. I am not out there to make impressions on anyone, or to have the "in" thing at the field. I am taking the unothrodox step of getting a used entry level pattern plane, instead of going large scale. I do this because I only want to spend a certain amount of money in the hobby, and not have to mortgage the house. I am going to use that plane for precision sport flying, and to learn subtle stick inputs. I want to be able to do a single slow roll the length of our field, and up until now, I havent had the equipment to do it. Yes, I bought a magic, but not because it was the hot plane to get. I got it because I looked at it as a great everyday plane, cheap to build and fly, with the most bang for the buck. I did also get a 1/3 scale weeks solution figberglass fuselage at a swap shop a couple months ago, But when i realized how much time, effort and $$$ it was going to take me to finish it the way I wanted to finish it, it wasnt a cost effective project. I sold it to someone on RCU, and wish him all the luck in completing it. Maybe a year or two down the road, I'll take that level of project on.

Just do what you want to do, not because its popular, but because you want to (unless that means flying at my head in the pits, cause if ya do that, I do have a bomb drop rigged up on my trainer, and the neigbor has three large dogs who love to eat mexican food )

I dont think this guy was able to meet the 55lb weight limit on his model, but ya gotta give him an A for effort on trying to transport it to the field on the roof of his car

Default In and Out?

The Ultimate, OUT? Kit Building OUT? ARF's IN?

Not at my house.

-I've bought one ARF, a mistake never to be repeated. Not a bad airplane, but not assembled anything like I assemble a kit. And I really question what the long term durability of it will be compared to my kit planes. Sorry, ARF's aren't bad and they are a good thing for a lot of people. But compared to a well built kit, there's no comparison.

-The Ultimate is a classic. People are still Kitting and Producing new Ultimate ARF's. Why? A good flying aerobat is still a good flying aerobat, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Same for the Extra. Seems there are even brand new Laser 200 ARF's and kits coming out as well.

Which brings me to this point. There are several 'classic' kits which have been being bought and flown for many years and continue to do so. Sig Kadet series, Astro-Hog, 4-Star Series, Goldberg Ultimate, Tiger 2, Top Flite warbird series.

Now can anyone name an ARF that has been going strong for 10+ years and is still seen regularly at club fields?

Ahh Testors glue, the 9 year olds first unintentional drug induced stupor. I somewhat remember melting, err assembling plastic models with that stuff, and by the end of the night, I was wearing more glue than the model or the tube. If drug addicts found out about that stuff, kmart would still be in business.

ZDZ-if you can get one
TAURUS-if you can get one--or afford it
DAVE PATRICK 330- if you can get one
DAVE PATRICK ULTIMATE-if you can get one
hummm--"In appears hard to get"

OUT
COX 049s- (I know I'm going to hear about that one)

$1500 with every crash of what is "IN"

It's gotta be fun or else it's work--which is it?

Default INs and Outs

Overall your list sounds about right, but I don't have to like it.

My list would be a little different:

Ins

Loud, 24,000 RPM Screaming 2 strokes
Pylon Racing (Believe it or not, the new Lanier ARF Q500 will bring many newcomers back to pylon racing. Ask Bubba how many he's sold)
Extra 300 (working on one now with a 1.60 two stroke)
Fast planes
Glow powered
Still like to build kits, but not too stubborn to buy an ARF.

Outs

4 strokes (Still don't get the fascination). Oh boy, I can turn a bigger prop at slower rpms for twice the price.
anything slow
anything electric
Non computer radios (spend the money cheap skates, you will like it).
