RE: What are your flying habits?
I wonder if they are doing this in an effort to justify raising AMA rates...maybe they feel they are underestimating the amount of flying going on. It's like car insurance, more flying = higher insurance. Hopefully I'm WAY off here!!! [sm=bananahead.gif]

Try working with the ol Monty Python song.
"Always look on the bright side of life"
You might find you don't walk around sniffing your finger all the time and people won't accuse you of picking your nose.
This tricked down to me thru the normal club/AMA channels. Not thru RCU conspiracy threads and PMs.

Who said anything about conspiracy? It's an unregulated poll that I don't know the purpose of. I'm not in the habit of providing information when the reasons for collecting it are not clear.

RE: What are your flying habits?
I'm going to make an assumption here. I dont know any of this for fact.
In the same trickle down info that Vic got, I saw mention of protecting the 72Mhz band.
Now my assumption is that with all the change going on to switch almost all analog radio use to digital. Cellphones and TV for example, the FCC stands to make a lot of cash from auctioning off the available spectrum after these switchovers. All of the analog cellphone spectrum has already been auctioned off for billions of $. I am assuming that AMA is either jumping to conclusions about a future auctioning off of 72Mhz or has already seen evidence that this could/will occur.
Therefore they are collecting data to provide usage statistics to the FCC much like they did when they acquired 72Mhz in the first place.

That's what a few of us were talking about at the field yesterday...
I have recently purchased a couple of 2.4 systems, but have a TON of 72mhz stuff that I hope I can still use for quite a while yet!

RE: What are your flying habits?
It's not paranoia. Just awareness. When you give up information about yourself, it's best to know who's collecting it and for what purpose. The link in the original post was to a blind survey, with no information about who was conducting it. Would you want to participate if it were being done by a group that was trying to show that a county park field was under-utilized compared to club fields, and should therefore be done away with?

RE: What are your flying habits?
Initially I ignored the posting because there was no information about the survey other than the link.
This type of link is exactly the kind that gets your computer infected with all the various types of garbage, if the destination is evil.
Once it was identified that it was an AMA survey I went to the AMA site and followed the link from there.
The survey is pretty generic, I can see nothing that suggests conspiracy of any kind.
Here are the questions that are asked ........
Outdoor RC Model Pilots: We Need Your Input!
The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) is working to provide statistical information regarding the quantity of modeling activity occuring on an annual basis. The request is time-sensitive due to meetings scheduled in the next few weeks.
It doesn't matter how your airplane is powered, or even if it is! These questions are for all outdoor non-tethered model aircraft operations.
Please help us better represent our membership by filling out the survey below.
1. How many years of aeromodeling exerience do you have?

Gee, "thats better, or thanks for clearing that up, or even How about putting the link in there too" would be a little nicer way to address things.
I was just trying to do a good thing and you keep punking me out, what is your problem mister?[&:]

No need to get grouchy. I just asked why not put the actual AMA page? It clears up any possible confusion. A person might as well do it right if they're going to do it, you know?

vicman,
I would not have known anything about the survey if you had not started the thread, it might have been a rocky beginning but all is well at this time. Your efforts and intentions are appreciated.
