Had a great day yesterday at the basin.
I was able to maiden by Corsair and get an additional 3 flights for good measure. Couple small things to tweak , but overall the plane flew incredibly well and is a dream to fly.
Thanks to all those that helped out.
A special thanks to Mike Gaasch for the incredible photos. Everytime I come out to fly something, Either Mike or Ken are always ready and willing to document the process with excellent quality photographs. They are much appreciated.

I flew at the Basin up until we moved to Las Vegas area .It always busy especially on weekends . I used to work at the Van Nuys airport and would stop at Sepulvada Basin after work to put in a few flights before fighting the "freeway 500" .Weekends were always busy -the basin was actual;;y a "catch basin " that I've seen 8-10 ft. deep in water. The golf course to the west was a grave yard for hundreds of models. There were 2 hobby shops (Smith Brothers and Hobby People ) who did a lot of business .

Will be vacationing in the area next week and found out that the hotel is on the other side of the freeway from this field, so will likely visit. How do you pronounce Sepulveda? I don't want to sound like a hick when I visit.
I hope it is more active than this thread.

...or we simply just say - "the Basin"
It's my home field since 1977. The locals just call it - the Basin. ( because the field sits in a flood-control basin ) The current field layout was designed, around 1972, by Charlee and Bob Smith of BSI Adhesives (Bob Smith Industries) They also owned,at one time, Smith Brothers Hobby Center which is still located in Northridge on Reseda Blvd.
There's lots of modeling history at the "Basin".
I believe the gates still open around sunrise and close about 30 mins after official sunset. And there should be flyers there seven days a week. Weekends are still quite busy.
You should check the host-club's website for weekend schedule of activities. They host several events throughout the year.

Have fun!

Rcphotog, I have driven Sepulveda Blvd / US 1 from Santa Monica to Laguna Beach more times than I can count. The only Sepulveda basin I remember was way out off of the 101 on Victory near Van Nuys, there is a big park there. Is that where the basin is that you are referring to? Do you carry when you go there?

Welcome to the basin. It's a fun field to fly at, with several hobby shops right around the corner to run to for all your needs. It's been my home field since '77. This weekend there's an electric event on Saturday. Sunday is open flying.

I was in Pheonix three weeks ago. It was 115! If you walk more than a couple hundred feet the sidewalk would blister your feet though your shoes! Well they felt like they would blister anyway.

The Basin is on my RC bucket list, along with Floyd Bennett field in NY. Sig field, Rhinebeck, and the
Joe Nall make my list as well. I have flown at Muncie twice, so check that one off.

I don't know if I posted this or not. If you watch the original 1973 "Gone In 60 Seconds" movie the car chase
goes through the Sepulveda Basin flying field while guys are flying.

I was born and raised in Orange County, grew up in South Laguna so I know what the weather is like, I also know what it's like to be half drunk and out of gas at two AM in Pico Rivera. Not as much fun as it sounds like. If I was looking for a place to fly I would just go past San Bernadino and head on out to Phelan and Wrightwood, lots of room out there and not near an airport. Anyway there is a very nice field down at Mission Bay in San Diego and you can also fly the interior of Fiesta Island but it's all sand. Still, it's very quiet and a nice place to fly. If things get too hectic you can always head out the 8 frwy there are a gazillion places to fly off of the Imperial Highway. Southern California is more populated than it used to be so you have to go east toward AZ to find really wide open spaces. Oh and it gets even hotter than Van Nuys but if you grew up there you know that.
