Sepulveda Basin

They just had a model jet crash there not too long ago; all the grass and heavy brush is burned all the way from Woodley Ave, down along side the Apollo Flight Field access road right up to the runway... I wasn't there when it happen, but I have been there before when jets crash and they usually evacuate the entire flight field while the fire department put out the fires... those jets sure do burn... there's mutterings about banning model jets flying there altogether, due to the adjacent Van Nuys Airport, the excessive speed of the model jets, and the risk of excessive altitude.

WOW...............I don't get on these forums very often. I just to look at this one as it brought memories. Anybody on here go to the first duct fan meet in 1985 at the Basin? I was the guy that organized it. That was a fantastic time. No turbines back then.

Sorry, it was a Byron F-86 with RhomAir retracts. I did a very Looooooow pass over the runway at full speed about 2" above the runway. Just before I pulled up, I dropped down on the runway about 10 feet, then pulled up, went into a left turn to turn around and land on the runway. When I setup my landing the nose gear wouldn't come down. The fuse had major damage.

No kidding... that's one of the worse burn outs I've seen there in a while... never would have thought an electric would cause that, but I guess the battery pak shorted, just happen to hit in the right location.

No, bring back the big drainage pipes. I want to see how many people will try to fly thru now that ARFs are so common. The local Hobby Shops made a killing in the '80's when the pipes were there.

I forgot to mention that I did get to visit last month for about 15 minutes. Saw a couple of turbines flying and control line across the parking lot. Nice facility. I think you guys are safe from the LA take you to jail ban if someone fly's over 550 feet, right? I hope you guy's have an agreement with Bob Hope Airport or any other airport you are within 5 miles of.

Yes, last week I was there and the VP of the club Mike Stoner was out there flying a jet with some people and flew over my head, as well as a few others at about 180mph two times. Had to be about 10ft over my head! I asked not to do that, and why they needed to fly over other pilots? He said if I don't like it, I can fly somewhere else... He was the most arrogant and unprofessional person I've ever seen out there in a long time. He wasn't even sorry. There's no excuse ever to do things like that.
This past Wednesday, the Brazilian pylon racing team was there practicing for a race at Whittier, and they were flying over the pits, parking lot and heli area with the Q40's all day long. This nonsense is what is going to be the death of the flying field and possible a few humans if this continues. I don't think AMA would approve of the VP thinking this is totally acceptable behavior. Lots of others were there complaining too, but fell on deaf ears. Benny Elkouby is the Pres. of the club, and he didn't do anything about it either. The club is upside down with their logic and management. Everyone talks about regulation and safety, yet the 2 top guys are the biggest violators of them all. The other day, Benny allowed some jet guys drive their truck through the open field, which is a wildlife reserve. He has no authority to give that permission. Yet, it's going on.

Yes, it's L.A. County. I've been flying there since the mid 70's. My father has been flying there since the early 50's. It pains us to see this going on from within the ranks that should be setting an example and keeping the rif raf out. Who do you go to, when the top people are the problem? I want the field to stay, but things need to be dealt with. Some club officers need to be removed. I sent a letter to the AMA the other day and this morning regarding the matter. We have other small private clubs around the area, but they aren't nearly as nice as the basin, plus it's expensive and limited to what you can fly. The great thing about the basin is how large it is. You can fly anything and they hold some of the largest events in the world. That place is like my second home. I'd be at a real loss, if it were to be shut down.
