I have been taking a break from going to the field so you think my opinion doesn't matter? I have been going to the field for the last 25 years and will continue in the future if it is not ruined by all the beginners who can afford a turbine or all the electric flyers behind you while you try and fly on the main runway.
Before you tell me to shut up or my opinion does not matter, you should go to the first post in this thread and see who it was addressed to. I think I can say what I think here as much as anyone else can.
What is your real name so I can introduce myself to you at the field?

Why thanks Bob. The above quote from that post was really kind of prophetic, I have gone on and on.

He does get preferred treatment.
Not because he is on the board and certainly not because of the trench.
However spearheading projects like this will get our attention.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
We have finally managed to get the Park and Recs to sign off on our new project.
We will be starting the Park Flyer shade structure project in 3 weeks. We are going to need all the help we can get.
Please PM me or let Benny know if you are available for any help.
Here is a rough plan of what we have in mind. There will be also up to 10 new tables that will get added to the park Flyer Pitt area.

Benny is my hero as well as Dennis and so many others at Apollo field! Keep up the good work my friends! Thank you for the photos Jason, I would venture to guess there has never been more done as a valley flyer president than in your 2 terms, big pat on the back to you. These Valley Flyers improvements will be long lasting symbols of all who are involved in making the field a better place to fly at. THANKS!!!

Thank you gentlemen for the kind words.
We are continuing what the club has been doing for 60 years.
Check out the pics below. It is from August 1973 when the Club raised the money and build our runway where it stands now. You will find the name of all the contributors..
I think there was no Woodley or the 405 Freeway.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
Thanks for posting these documents Jason! I see some familiar names there, if anyone is reading who was around back then can chime in with any stories or memories it would be neat. It sure looked like a monumental effort to create the runway and organize the funds. Do you have anymore photos or letters like this?
No doubt Billy!!

RE: Sepulveda Basin
The Valley Flyers have been the best thing to happen to the field, IMHO. If we had to depend on the general public to maintain or improve the field it would still be a plot of weeds still waiting for its first mowing. Some of the users think the field is the creation of Parks and Rec and the city.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
How about a little perspective to go along with our history.....
If you examine the runway you'll notice it was built for pylon racing. The Smith Bros. helped design the field specifically for racing as it was the main organized activity at the field for a long time. One of the contributors, Howard Reed has a race named in his honor for dropping from a heart attack during a race at the Basin. Jason is the first club president in a long time who's main agenda didn't revolve around racing.
I'm sure they didn't anticipate the need for more room for Electrics and Helis and having the small planes flying behind the flight line would have surely raised a stink. I wonder what the history of how the mowed grass area and sprinklers is because that is what the field needs more than concrete right now.
And speaking of history The valley Flyers are not responsible for all the improvements at the field. There are two other clubs that played a major role in the development of the field, The Black Sheep and the Giant Scale clubs had a lot to do with the Basin as well. In fact the Black Sheep seems to be better connected than the Flyers if you look at how much was spent to upgrade the circles the last time around.
So yes, I agree that what Jason has been doing is great and all the volunteers who work on the field so benevolently are wonderful. Let's not lose perspective here though, just because someone is willing to do the work doesn't make them automatically right in their vision of what the field should be and it definitely doesn't entitle them to any special privileges not afforded to every member of the public. Working on the field is their hobby and if they want to do it that's great. Let's just not focus on what's right in front of us and miss the big picture.

That does invoke some memories all right,,,
I bought my first kit (control line), engine (cox .049) and later my first radio (futaba 2 channel $199) from Coby Evert,, mid-late 70's. We used to fly control line at the shool across the street from his shop.
and
I was there the day God took Howard Reed up to Heaven (rip my friend)
Glad to here the VFs are doing well and are looked upon better in the eyes of the basin flyers,,, there were some dark years

how did that come to be?
The run way was so bad come the 90's that your wheels could fall into the cracks and your plane nose over,, happened to me a few times,, Well for years the Valley flyers had been collecting moneys in a "Runway Fund" to have it repaved. Every event they sold hotdogs and soda and that money went into the fund, there wear many many other fundraisers also..
But they were short the money to get it repaved year after year,,
Now if memory serves me correctly Gene Sidwell finally put them over the top with a sizable contribution,, in the several thousands if I remember right. Now Gene was a big time Quickie and former F1 racer, Gene was very well to do. I don't think he was even a member of the VFs at the time,,I could be wrong on that point
The point is,, at the time the Runway was "redone",, racing was a big part of what was going on at the basin,, those were some fun years,, Quickie, F1, Warbirds, HOB AT-6, Everything but Giant Sacle racing.
The current "Quickie launch area" was never a part of the original runway and the Pylon mount pads were added many years later,, by the racing guys who were at the time Officers in Valley Flyers

Check out the pics below. It is from August 1973.
Check out the pics below. It is from August 1973.
Pit areas were assigned by frequency, not all helter skelter as it is today. People layed their frequency flag sticks down on the ground in order and guys took their turn flying. People put their freq. flags on the freq. poles so you knew what channel was turned on. Everyone was courteous and abided by the rules and etiquette.
No park flyer idiots were zooming over the pits. No park flyer idiots were buzzing pilots on the runway flight line.
No giant scale 3D idiots and their weed wacker planes were hovering over the center of the runway blocking all other planes from flying.
I miss the good old days.........
