PVC Outdoors
PVC outdoors in the sun seems to deteriorate after a few years.
Has anyone painted PVC to prevent this?
What paint did you use?
How did you prep the PVC?
How long did it last?
Thanks,

PVCWas made to be used underground where UV is not a problem. It wasn't till some quick of mind folks decided that they could use the stuff like oversized tinkertoys to make all sorts of things that would be used above ground where UV rays can be a problem.
I have read about some work around to this problem but for the life of me cannot tell you what for now. There is probably PVC with a UV resistance coating on it which would probably cost more than the regular stuff.
Surely someone here knows the right answer.

What kind of deterioration are you seeing? I've got some sch 40 outside on my pool that is about 4 or 5 years old that is fine. It gets lots of high heat in the texas summer sun. Got several sticks in a outside storage pile I use from time to time for airplane cradles or water piping. Havent noticed any problems with it, yet!

UV will deteriorate PVC after a time. The gray stuff used for electrical work is UV reistant and is intended for exposure. Krylon makes a good rattle can paint especially for plastics (FUSION). This stuff works very well and is easy to use.

RE: PVC Outdoors
Our club in the Houston area used it for pilot stations. It got brittle over time. Maybe about two years. I suspect the pool plumbing worked better (lived longer) because it was not subject to various forms of beatings and moving about. We had not tried the gray stuff. I wanted to install galvanized pipe and be done with it, but was transfered before we got to it.
