Do you think I should pay $370 for shipping?
I wanted to own the Great Planes Lancair badly. Since there are no kits available here in Pakistan so I have to order all my stuff from USA through towerhobbies. Since the Lancair is too big to ship via USPS tower quoted me a $370 shipping charge through Fedex. Wat do you guys advise, should I pay that much for shipping or not? I am confused what to do.

NO !!
Shop around, there must be plenty of other people that might be willing to to an international shipment.
Shoot off a few emails to companies and see what responses you get.... at least you'll get some sort of comparison..

$370.00 plus.
Faisalk,
Before commiting $370.00 to shipping, you should check with your local customs office and local delivery service to see what additional charges will come. I ordered a Dave Patrick Ultimate with a $275.00 shipping charge. Customs plus local delivery charges added another $150.00 to that. $850.00 for a DP Ultimate. Had I known all, I would have simply taken a Delro kit and built it myself.
I have taken letters from customers complaining about the additional fees in their countries. All that we see is the shipping charge to your local destination, not the additional fees added on by local delivery contractors that already get paid by the original shipping fee.

If you are willing to consider other planes there are many ARF manufacturers in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, etc with websites who could probably offer you a good selection of ARFs at a good price and send them to you much cheaper than any US based company could.

See if you can find a friend at the US Consulate (Embassy).....or a member of our armed forces who would like to fly with you.

for a little more $$ you can fly to the US and pick it up along with many things ..... take more time and do some more comparisions with other suppliers.

I had the same problem getting my plane over from England (it was built over there). I was quoted 300 english pounds, or Euros, can't remember which. So I got on the phone with two friends who also have planes with the guy in England, and we agreed that I should go over with my Dad, pick up all three of our planes, and bring them back with us. The airline didn't charge us extra (we were under the weight limit), and when we split the costs, it all came down to 100 bucks each.

Ooops, just noticed the '100 bucks' comment. You're not really in Ireland, are you (unless you're an Aussie in disguise...)?

I good idea for kits and smaller items, but the USPS that feeds into the APOs, and APOs themselves will not carry anything larger than 132" linear, so most ARFs over 40-60 size will not ship through an APO or FPO.
I have ordered three large airplanes while here in Europe and got bagged with high shipping and customs, local delivery, etc. Strange, Carden's 30% and 35% airplanes where half the cost to ship than the DP Ultimate. I guess they are serious about doing business world wide and entered into a good contract. Dennis and Caroline are great about minimizing the additional cost involved with big boxes.
