Default RCU Behind the Scenes

All this talk about battling hackers, viruses and such on RCU got me thinking. There are hundreds if not thousands of people a day on this website discusing our various hobbies all for our own entertainmant. I for one, and suspect many of you, consider this site as an extension of your various clubs, fields, tracks etc. It is some place you go for fun, as that is why we participate in our respective hobbies. It occured to me today that this website is a business where people work everyday. Someone has to develop and maintain the site, sell advertising, moderate the forums and marketplace, and then there are possibly people behind them performing support rolls such as payroll, clerical staff etc.

Soooo. I guess what I am asking is for the RCU insiders to tell us a little bit about themselves.
Who owns this business? How did it come to be? How many members are there? How many of those members are active? How many peole are employed there? Where are you based? How many volunteer thier time as moderators? Any othere interesting tidbits of info about the site would be great.

Being that I know nothing about this industry and what it takes to operate a website like this, I may be way off base and this site is operated out of some teenagers bedroom in his parents basement. If thats the case let us know.

Thanks

IIRC, RCU was sold out to a big News Conglomerate several years ago. Probably a search could find that announcement out for you or maybe the administrator will post it here.

True, a few years ago, Hearst publishing bought 51% of RCU, but RCU was bought back by the original owners this year, so it is back in private hands

Here's something I wrote back in 2005:

Quote:
ORIGINAL: MinnFlyer

Ok, here's my version:

In the beginning, there was a void.

And ViGod said, ''Let us fill the void''.

And the void was filled by ViGod with RCUniverse, and ViGod saw that it was good.

ViGod then divided the Universe into seperate Forums.

And people came to the site, and they too saw that it was good.

And they told the many, and too, so the many came, and saw that it was good.

And several of them hadeth bequest upon them the role of Moderator.

And soon, the multitude began to arrive. And ViGod created yet more Forums for them, so that the multitude could be with their own kind.

Then Satan showed up in the form of a Helicopter...

I better stop now while I'm ahead
RCUniverse.com is owned by Marc Vigod and Mike Kranitz. There are about 3 or 4 other paid staff positions and the rest of us work on a volunteer basis.

OK...nice guesswork. Facts:

Hearst and MediaNews bought ALL of RCU back in 2007.

In February 2010, Marc and I bought it back. Even though he only owns 20%, Marc does all the work and I'm just a lazy ******* who flies helicopters.

I like the biblical references (hilarious) but I would add:

"And ViGOD was a vengeful god and those who crossed his path would be smote."

As for personal bios, check out each of our Dossiers in the members area.

Mike/Mark, as a long time member I am thankful for what you have done. This site has given me friends in places I never would have known. Some of the guys I have met in here I have had the privelege of flying with and there are others who I call very close friends. My building skills have increased as well as my involvement with other clubs.

FWIW I thougth Satan came in the form of LiPos???

I dunno. Some of the mods deserve hazzard pay...and some deserve the firing squad. Neither sounds fun to me.
Whatever you guys are having please keep up the good work.

Minn, you are not in the firing squad column...yet[sm=stupid.gif]

+1 many times over, just replace "flying" with "driving" . I really enjoy how this is truely a "global" community as well. I post a question at 9pm in Dubai, and get a response from Iowa, Australia, Greece or Japan in the next couple of hours....Love it! Keep it up guys. [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Thanks for the replys. As stated above I feel that RCU is an extension of my local clubs and I greatly enjoy interacting with the other RC enthusiasts on this forum. There is an unbeleivable wealth of knowledge on this site. Thanks for putting it out there for us all to enjoy.

Interesting!

So we have the straight dope on the ownership. What about the other "tidbits of info" Flyin Beagle asked about? It would be nice to learn some fun facts of RCU.

Life is good to be able to pass on our experience and knowledge ( if any) to the young ones. It has been a lot of fun for me to chat with other guys with similar interests. I have wanted to meet with a bunch of the guys face to face as I have honest respect and affection for many herein. But as in life, its just not to be even as the distance is not that great.
I thank everyone.

ENJOY

Roger, all I ask is that you pass some of those bad ***** engines on to me and let me enjoy them and the experience.
You know I'll put them to use.

Soooo, MK, why didn't you list lekkie heli pilot in the bio? Never mind all the jokes that can go with that. Also why no real decent spell check since 02? I'm done picking. [8D]

Vickman:

Well heck, what do you want?? There are a bunch now on e-barf including the SJ Jett 50, the 60LX should listed today, YS 63 and 110. Search "roger retract". And yea, some vintage stuff in the near future. Some stuff I have never heard of seen like a Super Tiger 40X RV and exhaust , or a OS-max -6-rc. I still sleep with the Jett 35, so it stays to continue life pulling some sort of 3D thing. If you ever get close to Merced, give me a yell. ENJOY

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaze: At 50 you are just reaching adulthood. At 50 I was still racing motocross in the old timmer and vets expert class. Now at 75 I am paying for all my youthful acts of indiscretion, and see some of my errors of my ways, but still trying. Hang in there, getting old is not for sissies. ENJOY

HA! Well, I was just trying to dispel the notion that teenagers were running this place. They might be next week, though!
