RE: Do you own a valid passport?

Just a quick survey really.

I've been told by peeps that I know here that work at the consulate that only about 10% of the US population actaully own a passport.
They joke that some people would consider a trip to Hawaii as "overseas".

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I'd be it much less than 10%

Well, I'm no world traveler,, but since they made it mandatory to go into Canada, my wife and I renewed ours last year for a Camping trip

I'm retired, so no business travel for me, but we do travel abroad, and yes we do keep our passports up to date.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I don't. As amazing as this country is, I see no reason to ever leave it.

I have friends, relatives and business associates in Europe who are always amazed at the vastness of the US. I was speaking to some of my UK clients recently about going to the Toledo Show. I told them that I was flying to it because it was a 14 hour drive. They said, "You can't drive for 14 hours anywhere in the UK unless you're going in circles"

Some friends of mine (here in Minnesota) had a group of foreign exchange students staying with them. When asked what they wanted to do on the upcoming weekend they said, "We want to drive to Hollywood for the day". Europeans have no idea of how BIG this country is!

Compare a visit to Maine with a weekend in Florida. Washington state with the Jersey shore. Mount Rushmore to the Alamo. Meteor Crator to Devil's Tower.

I'll stay right here :D

I have one for business travel. Minnflyer pretty much speaks for me.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I have had one since I was 17 and am now 60. I have used each one for international travel, so it was imperative that I did. I worked in the Airline Indstry for over 30 years and used it numerous times. My latest one has a trip to Mumbai on it, but it was business not pleasure...although I did have a good time while there. I renew mine every time it expires.

Minnflyer will like this...I had visited 17 foreign capitols before making it to Washington, DC. And for my money, DC is by far the best of any.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
Since I live almost next to Mexico and I have to go there for work at times, YES.

I also have the new passport card. Very easy to carry in a wallet.

I have to agree with Minnflyer that people do not understand how big this country is. I was talking with a girl in Jamaica one time that was going to visit family in NY. She said that she would drive down to Texas to see me for a Saturday and then go back to her family in NY. I let her know how long it took to drive that distance here.

Well, considering that you have to either fly or cruise there and travel over the Pacific Ocean, well, one could consider that as "overseas". It certainly isn't overland, is it. :D

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
The last passport I held was a little green card that the US Army issued me. Back then (85-96) that would get me across most borders in europe when I was stationed in Italy. I traveled to several countries while I was there and never had any issues.

Since then I have not had the need to have a passport until this summer. I have been invited to cover an RC event held in Brazil in July. So I had to get a passport in order to attend that. In fact, it came in the mail yesterday.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
As my mother said, "I haven't seen all of Texas yet." Spending some time outside the USA, particularly in South and Central America gives one new understanding in how good things are here in the USA. if you are cynical about how good our government is, how good our people are, etc., I suggest you can be cured of your cynicism by just a little travel abroad.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I've had a couple, as I've had occasion to travel overseas on business. Let mine expire, then we decided to ride our Harleys to Canada last vacation - so I had to get another. I'll decide again next decade...

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
Not yet, but someday I will fly to Europe. I want to visit a taping of Top Gear and I want to blast around the Nurburgring in a sports car, and those things don't happen here in the US.

Not gonna do it while the TSA is probing passengers though. I don't have anything to hide but that doesn't mean I need to be searched anyways.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
Obviously being in Dubai I have one too. The 10% number has been out there for years. It is certainly believeable. Though, now that you have to have a PPort to travel to Canada/Mexico/Bahamas I expect the percentage has gone up. I have lost track of how many I have had. Got my first issued in '77.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
Wait a couple of years and you can run around the new F1 track they're building here just outside of Austin. They're trying to figure out how to get 12,000 cars in and out on race day. The two lane roads currently there would take 2 or 3 days to get in and same to get out. Lots of infrastructure has to be built for this track. When not in use, the track would be used for research testing. But there are no auto mfg's are around Austin, Texas. Moms little ranch is about 10 miles down the road a little so she decided to sell out and move. We wouldnt be able to get to her on race days.

378 05-03-2011 01:50 PM

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
Oh I'm most definitely going to be going to that track. I may not be able to afford to make it to the inaugural race but F1 in America = F1 I can drive to = F1 I can watch live.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I don't have and have never had one. I also think the 10% might be high. I would assume the 10% would be low for people living close to the Mexico or Canadian border. It's nother personal, there is just nothing I want to see overseas.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
no, havent renewed it since they changed the law 2-3 years ago... i have no reason to go to mexico anymore or canada...and dont plan on travelling outside the lower 48

you shoulda made it a poll...its nice to see the results at once, then read through the posts afterward

JollyPopper 05-03-2011 02:53 PM

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I have fully intended to get one for years. I intended to do that just as soon as I ran out of new places to go and things of interest to see here in the USA.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
Good luck with that :p

This country's too damn big to ever run out of cool things to explore, IMO.

RE: Do you own a valid passport?
I have (all my family) passport. Going to Barcelona in 4 weeks, driving to Provence, and then to Nice, Monaco and Menton for 2 weeks. Will go to Oshkosh later, and Boston (conference) in fall... In general, if you travel, it is difficult not to learn:-) I enjoy the food abroad too. When I travel in the US the first thing I do is research aviation museums close to the place I have to go. I went to some great warplane museums:-) Of course in Monaco I will drive the F-1 roads, slowly of course:-)
